Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.) triggered a late first-half run that brought Chestnut Hill College within four points, 45-41, of Post University by halftime of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. She scored 15 in the period and 22 points in the game, but in the second half Griffins could not keep up with the Eagles hot hand as the home team shot 56.3% (18-of-32) and put five players in double figures for an 89-73 win.
With the help of fellow junior guard
Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Pleasantville, N.J.), Gorczynski kept Chestnut Hill College (7-16, 5-11) neck-and-neck with Post University (9-13, 9-7), 17-16 at 11:27, until the Eagle defense pushed the home side out for a 13-point advantage, 29-16, less than three minutes later (8:51). After a Griffin time-out, Townsend-Mobley and Gorczynski rallied the pride for a halftime run that brought the deficit down to three points, 36-33, just before the five-minute mark (5:08), and eventually to two points, 37-35, on a layup by sophomore
Brittany McDonough (Brooklyn, N.Y.) only seconds later (4:33). The Eagles managed to stay ahead until senior forward
Annie Farrow (Ocean Township, Pa.) brought all things even, 41-41, heading to the final two minutes (2:06) of first-half play. But that's when senior guard Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.) gave the Eagles the momentum with the frames final four points, 45-41. The Eagles used the energy to reestablish their 13-point advantage, 78-65, before the eight-minute mark (8:23) of the second half. Unfortunately, this time the Griffins could not reverse the flow as the Eagles held out for a 16-point win.
Latham was 12-of-17 (.706) from the field in a 25-point effort. He also recorded five rebounds, three assists, and a block in her team-leading performance. Four other Eagles joined her in double figures including senior forward Raven Wright-James (Middletown, Conn.) who added six assists, a block, and a steal, to a 15-point, ten-rebound double-double.
Gorczynski hit at least six three-pointers in a game for the fifth time in her collegiate career and the second time this season as she connected on 6-of-13 (.462) from beyond the arch in her team-high scoring contest. Townsend-Mobley recorded 14 points, six rebounds, three assists, and a steal, while Farrow finished the afternoon with a 13-point, ten-rebound double-double; her fifth such performance this season.
The women's basketball team returns to Sorgenti Arena on Tuesday, February 18, when they host Georgian Court University for their final home contest of the 2013-2014 season. Prior to the start of the contest, the Chestnut Hill College Department of Athletics will recognize the year's graduating Griffins in an annual Senior Day ceremony.
