Late Turnovers Lose Griffins Tussle with Tigers

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (2/25/2014) – Junior guard Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Pleasantville, N.J.) kept Chestnut Hill College on the Tigers heels in the first half, 27-25, and after intermission it was Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.) who kept the Griffins in contention. But late turnovers led to a Holy Family University push that settled the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest in the home team's favor, 66-57.  
 
In another tight contest with Holy Family University (17-9, 15-4), Chestnut Hill College (8-18, 6-13) shot well, 44.0% (22-of-50), but lost ground on the Tigers with a 44-33 rebounding deficit and 20 turnovers. From the backcourt Townsend-Mobley dominated the Griffins first half effort, scoring 12 of her 16 points in a 27-25 halftime spread. After the break Gorczynski took over for the Griffins, scoring 11 of her 17 points and keeping them ahead of Tigers as late as 7:26, 50-49, in the second half. Sophomore center Kasey Woetzel (Wyckoff, N.J.) benefitted from late Griffin turnovers with six straight Tiger points reversing the momentum and grabbing the home team a five-point advantage, 55-50, just past the six-minute mark (5:55). The Griffins would get no closer than three points, doing so for the last time at 4:21, 58-55, as the Tigers rebounded their way to victory.
 
Woetzel was one of five Tigers in double figures as she came off the bench to match the effort of sophomore guard Erin Fenningham (Philadelphia, Pa.), who scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Fenningham also recorded four assists and a steal. Senior center Carolyne Heston (Feasterville, Pa.), senior guard Mary Ellen McCollum (Abington, Pa.), and junior forward Sarah Pawlak (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) all finished with ten points; Heston added nine rebounds, three assists, and a steal to her scoring while McCollum offered five rebounds, an assist, and four steals to her double-digit point total.
 
Gorczynski hit 4-of-7 (57.1) from beyond the arc and led the Griffins with 17 points, four rebounds, an assist, and four steals, but Townsend-Mobley was close behind with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Senior forward Annie Farrow (Ocean Township, N.J.) contributed seven points, ten rebounds, and two assists to the Griffin effort while senior center Aimee Bouie (New Castle, Del.) was good for four points, four rebounds, three assists, five blocks, and two steals.
 
The women's basketball team concludes the 2013-2014 season at 8-18 overall and 6-13 in CACC play.
