Griffins Endure Frantic Final Minutes, Defeat Warriors for Fifth CACC Win

2/8/2014 9:37:00 PM

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (2/8/2014) – Coming off the bench, junior center Seamus Radtke (Philadelphia, Pa.) inspired Chestnut Hill College for a 37-24 halftime advantage, which the Griffin backcourt defended for a 77-71 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Nyack College. He went for 13-points and seven rebounds in the first half but it was the Griffin backcourt that preserved his effort and warded off the Warriors with an endless march to the free throw line.

Nyack College (8-14, 6-9) controlled an early two-point advantage, 8-6 (15:03), before Radtke entered the fray for Chestnut Hill College (7-14, 5-9). Over the next nine minutes, Radtke accumulated 13 points, seven rebounds, and an assist to push the Griffins out to a 20-point advantage, 34-14, with four minutes remaining in the first half (4:01). However, over the final four minutes of the period the Griffin lead began to crumble with junior forward Nick Moore (Sicklerville, N.J.) motivating the Warriors on a 30-18 run that bookended the halftime break, 37-24, and left the visitors down eight points, 52-44, on a three-point basket from junior guard Khalid Samuels (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) at 11:32. The Griffins managed to quickly return the lead to 14 points, 58-44 at 10:04, before another Warrior charge cut the deficit to three points, 61-58, heading to the final five minutes of play (5:34). Fortunately, the Griffins would endure the endless series of fouls the followed as junior guard Christian Walck (Lancaster, Pa.), senior guard Jakeem Bogans (Philadelphia, Pa.), and graduate guard Taylor Trevisan (West Chester, Pa.) each took their turns at the free throw line in the six-point victory, 77-71.

Samules led all scorers with 20 points. He also recorded two rebounds, five assists, and a steal in the loss. Moore totaled 19 points, eight rebounds, an assist, two blocks, and a steal, while junior guard Chris Hampton (Queens, N.Y.) offered ten points and four rebounds to the cause.

Five Griffins finished in double figures, which included Ratke's 17 points, 16 from Bogans, 15 from Walck, 11 from sophomore guard Dexter Harris (Swedesboro, N.J.), and ten points from Trevisan. Radtke added nine rebounds and an assist to his team-leading performance while Trevisan paired his double-digit scoring effort with eight rebounds, an assist, and a block.

The men's basketball team returns to Sorgenti Arena on Tuesday, February 11, when they host, local CACC rival, Philadelphia University for an 8:00 p.m. contest.
