Box Score 2 Aberdeen, Md. – (3/11/2014) – In their first action since Florida, Chestnut Hill College swept today's doubleheader with Lincoln University (PA) with a complete-game effort from junior pitcher
Dominic Raia III (Philadelphia, Pa.) in game one, 9-0, and a clutch relief appearance from senior pitcher
John Bernhardt III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) in game two, 5-4. Scoring nine runs on nine hits, the Griffins erupted for a six-run fifth inning in the opener, then took the lead for good in the fourth inning of game two on a sacrifice fly from freshman
Grant Opalisky (Ambler, Pa.).
In a more competitive game two, Chestnut Hill College (3-7) took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the second inning thanks to singles from junior third baseman
Taylor Steen (New Egypt, N.J.), sophomore catcher
Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), a couple of Lincoln University (1-11) errors, and a fielder's choice from senior second baseman
Mark Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.). The Lions would get a run back in the bottom of the inning, 3-2, before outscoring the Griffins in the third inning, 2-1, to leave the contest tied at 4-4. In the fourth inning, the Griffins took advantage of a Lion pitching change with a lead-off walk to Woltemate, a two-base throwing error, and a sacrifice fly from Opalisky producing the eventual game-winning run, 5-4. Bernhardt took over for junior pitcher
Dane Gahr (Brick, N.J.) in the bottom of the frame to give the Griffins four innings of scoreless relief. He collected his first collegiate win (1-0), allowing only four hits and a walk while striking out five over four innings of work.
While Raia handcuffed the Lions, allowing one hit and striking out, a program record, 12 in the opener, the Griffins picked up the lumber in a nine-run effort. A lead-off single and a stolen base put sophomore first baseman
Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) in prime position to score on Steen's following second-inning single, 1-0. Two hits, a hit batsman, four walks, and a Lion error contributed to the Griffin fifth, 7-0, and in the sixth, the Griffins platted two more on bases-loaded, pinch-hit single from junior
Seamus Finnegan (Collegeville, Pa.). Raia allowed only four base runners; walking three and surrendering the Lions only hit on a third-inning, lead-off single.
The baseball team is scheduled to host Wilmington University on a 3:00 p.m. non-conference game on Thursday, March 13.
