Box Score Kutztown, Pa. – (4/22/2014) – Chestnut Hill College took advantage of some Golden Bear mistakes to an early grab lead before a tremendous bullpen effort saved today's 8-5 victory at Kutztown University. Sophomore left fielder
Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) and junior right fielder
Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.) each recorded three hits while senior second baseman
Mark Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.) knocked in two runs with two-out double in the second inning.
Kutztown University (23-17) scored in their first at-bat of the afternoon, 1-0, but Woltemate's double put Chestnut Hill College (15-15) in the lead 2-1 after the second frame. With two hits and three Golden Bear errors, the Griffins scored four more runs in the third inning to give sophomore pitcher
Casey Kern (Stony Point, N.Y.) a 6-2 advantage. But he allowed a Golden Bear run in the fourth inning, 6-3, and got into some trouble in the fifth inning, 6-5, before some bullpen help, a Looby single, and a McLaughlin double made it 7-5 in the seventh inning. A run-batted-in (RBI) single from sophomore catcher
Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) made it 8-5 in the ninth inning, proving some extra insurance for freshman
Eric Tidwell (Roslyn, Pa.), senior
Richard Cavazza (Highland, N.Y.), freshman
Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), and senior
Vincent Manzella (Matawan, N.J.), who combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. Tidwell got the Griffins out of trouble in the Golden Bear sixth inning while Manzella earned his third save of the season.
The baseball team returns to Latshaw-McCarthy Field tomorrow, Wednesday, April 23, to host Philadelphia University in a 4:00 p.m. Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), Senior Night doubleheader.
