Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (1/17/2015) – Chestnut Hill College found themselves playing "catch up" for the full 40 minutes this afternoon, as Holy Family University led the Griffins from the opening tip in a 74-56 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) final. Senior forward
Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J.) scored a season-high 21 points en route to her third consecutive double-double (14 rebounds), but her effort was not enough to keep pace with the Tigers, who placed three scorers in double figures and out-rebounded the Griffins 43-34 for their seventh league win.
Freshman guard Kylie Giedemann (Turnersville, N.J.) carried Holy Family University (10-7, 7-2) to a daunting 41-26 halftime advantage, coming off the bench to hit 6-of-9 (66.7%) from the floor, including three from long range (3-of-5, 60.0%), and a free throw (1-of-2, 50.0%) in a 16-point first half. The Tigers lead first reached double digits, 15-5, just past the 13-minute mark (12:54) and it increased to as many as 19 points, 38-19, before the final two minutes of the period (2:04).
In the second half, Chestnut Hill College (4-12, 2-7) found themselves battling uphill against a 15-point deficit, 41-26, that was quickly extended to 18 points, 44-26, at 19:27 on a three-point basket from the Tigers sophomore guard Jill Conroy (Brooklyn, N.Y.). But, it was the steady play of sophomore forward Abigail Iannotti (North Bennington, Vt.) and a combined 15 second-half points from juniors, guard Erin Fenningham (Philadelphia, Pa.) and forward Kasey Woetzel (Wycoff, N.J.), that maxed the home team's upper hand to 22 points, 59-37, midway through the frame (10:40). Senior guard
Shayla Felder (Cheltenham, Pa.) inspired a brief Griffin reprise with eight points in a 10-2 run that brought them back within 14 points, 61-47, with seven minutes left to play (7:03). A Turner jumper trimmed the margin to 13 points, 67-54, just prior to the three-minute mark (3:04), but the rally would go no further as time expired on an 18-point spread, 74-56.
Giedemann's 16-point first half served as a team-high for the Tigers, who also got double digit afternoons from Fenningham and Woetzel. Giedemann added four rebounds and four assists to her point production while Fenningham and Woetzel partnered for seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal in addition to their respective 12 and 14-point games. Iannotti provided eight points, a team-high ten rebounds, three assists and two steals off the Tiger bench.
Turner hit half the shots she took as she was 10-of-20 (50.0%) from the field and 1-of-2 (50.0%) from the free throw line in her highest scoring performance of the season. She also factored in defensively with ten of her rebounds and four steals earning the Griffins extra possessions during her 37 minutes. Felder also scored a season high with her 18 points coming on a 7-of-16 (43.8%) field goal effort and a perfect day at the free throw line (3-of-3, 100.0%). She also recorded four rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
The women's basketball team returns to Sorgenti Arena next Saturday, January 24, for a 1:00 p.m. CACC contest against Concordia College (NY).
