Box Score Caldwell, N.J. – (1/3/2015) – For Chestnut Hill College a New Year of basketball began this afternoon at Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival Caldwell University. The CACC North-leading Cougars received double-double efforts from freshman guard Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, Mass.) and senior forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, R.I.) and turned the Griffins over 21 times in a 77-54 win. With help from senior guard
Shayla Felder (Cheltenham, Pa.) and freshman guard
Nina Mazzarelli (West Chester, Pa.), senior forward
Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J.) led the Scarlet and Gold with her first double-double performance as a Griffin.
A series of early miscues gave Caldwell University (8-7, 5-1) the jump on Chestnut Hill College (3-9, 1-4), who kept the Cougars close until the midway point of the first half. Sanders had 14 of her 18 points in the opening period, including the three-point basket that put the home team up 20-10 with 10:34 before intermission. With Turner and freshman forward
Brianne Morgera (Newport, R.I.) working the glass while Felder and Mazzarelli ignited the offense the Griffins were able slow the Cougars pace to a 40-25 halftime spread. Their lead reached quickly expanded to 18 points, 43-25, after the break and hovered there until 13:52 (54-36), when freshman guard
Bianca Adams (Elkins Park, Pa.) and Turner issued the Griffins final resistance. The inside-out combination reduced the deficit to as little as 13 points, 56-43, midway through the frame (10:08), unfortunately they could not catch the Cougars who retired the game on a 21-11 run, 77-54.
Four Cougars finished in double figures; Sanders led the pride with 18 points, ten rebounds, five assists, and five steals. But she got plenty of help from Caswell, 16 points and 12 rebounds, and ten-point afternoons from freshman forward Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, Mass.) and junior guard Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, N.J.).
Turner totaled ten points, 15 rebounds, and a block while Felder penetrated the Cougar defense for 13 points, a rebound, and an assist. She also recorded a steal. Mazzarelli scored seven of her ten points in the first half, benefitting from the rebounding efforts of Turner and Morgera, who each came down with five rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
The women's basketball team continue their CACC schedule on Wednesday, January 7, when they travel across town for a 6:00 p.m. league game at the University of the Sciences (USciences).
