Box Score Orangeburg, N.Y. - (1/31/2015) – Senior forward
Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J.) continued her string of impressive performances and Chestnut Hill College used hot three-point shooting and a dominant effort on the glass to stampede to a 70-50 victory at Dominican College (NY) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play this afternoon. Turner rolled up game highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds, extending her Griffin Division II-record streak of double-doubles to six as Chestnut Hill College won on the Chargers home floor for the first time and snapped a six-game road losing streak behind a game-deciding run that began midway through the second half.
After a lackluster stretch to open the contest, Chestnut Hill College (6-13, 4-8) turned to its defense – and a sequence of three-point plays – to break it open. Trailing 4-3, the Griffins took the lead on a basket by Turner, 5-4 (14:16). After Dominican College (9-12, 7-5) answered a 3-pointer by freshman
Bianca Adams (Elkins Park, Pa.) with a bucket by senior forward Lashonda Hathorne (Queens, N.Y.), Chestnut Hill College cranked up the defensive intensity, holding the Chargers to a mere four points over the next nine-plus minutes. During that time, Turner scored on a jumper and a conventional three-point play and senior guard
Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J) buried a pair of 3-pointers, helping the Griffins assume a 19-8 lead at the 7:16 mark.
Chestnut Hill College took the same 11-point lead (29-18) into halftime, but the home side refused to go quietly. The Chargers closed to within 34-30, but five straight points by Gorczysnki pushed the Griffin advantage back to nine at 39-30 with 15:30 to play. Dominican College, however, went on a 10-0 run, regaining the lead on a layup by sophomore forward Lisa Bouffard (Wallkill, N.Y.) with 10:32 to play. That's when the Griffins made their move.
Gorczynski responded with one of her five 3-pointers to give Chestnut Hill College the lead right back, jumpstarting a 13-0 spurt that put the contest out of reach. Senior guard
Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Pleasantville, N.J.) knocked down a jumper to make it 44-40 (9:31), and Turner took it from there, following with eight consecutive points that included a pair of three-point plays, the last gifting the Griffins a 52-40 bulge with 7:30 showing on the clock. Dominican College finally stopped the bleeding with a deuce by Hathorne, 52-42 (6:58), but senior guard
Shayla Felder (Cheltenham, Pa.) jumpstarted the succeeding 16-4 run with a 3-pointer and jump shot. By the time the dust settled, sophomore
Danielle Gehring (Suffolk, N.Y.) had just finished knocking down two free throws to put Chestnut Hill College ahead, 68-46, with 1:52 remaining, and cap a 29-6 run after the Chargers took the lead midway through the period.
Chestnut Hill College went 8-for-15 (53.3%) from behind the three-point line, led by a 5-for-10 (50%) effort from Gorczynski, who finished with 19 points. Turner, who also had three assists and three steals, spearheaded the Griffins dominance on the boards, collecting five of their 14 offensive rebounds as the visitors secured a 46-33 rebounding advantage. She is the first Griffin to hit double figures in rebounds in six straight games since Ebony Washington during the 2010-2011 campaign, and her streak of double-doubles is already a program record since Chestnut Hill College joined National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II in 2007. Turner went 8-for-12 (66.7%) from the field and 5-of-6 (83.3%) from the line in her latest monster game.
Felder reached double figures with 10 points and added four rebounds and three helpers, while freshman forward
Nicole Parriski (Burlington, N.J.) grabbed eight caroms to go with five points.
Hathorne led the Chargers with 10 points and eight rebounds, and sophomore guard Shannon McGill (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a trio of 3-pointers for nine points. The Griffins limited Dominican College to 32.7% from the field (18-of-55) and forced 20 turnovers.
Chestnut Hill College will look to build on the momentum of its second road win of the season when the Griffins return to Sorgenti Arena to host intra-city rival University of the Sciences on Wednesday, February 4. Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
