Women’s Tennis Strikes Back at Lightning, Clinches CACC Playoff Berth

10/12/2015 6:07:00 PM

Box Score | Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/12/2015) – Exorcising last year's demons, the Chestnut Hill College women's tennis team defeated Goldey-Beacom College by a 6-3 count in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action this afternoon. In the process, the Griffins clinched a berth in the upcoming CACC Championship Tournament, remained unbeaten on the season, and avenged three setbacks at the hands of the Lightning from the 2014 fall campaign.

Chestnut Hill College (7-0, 5-0) raced out of the gates on a crisp fall day at the campus courts, taking an early lead on the rackets of sophomore Lara Scholtze (Bod Homburg, Germany) and senior captain Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario), who stormed to an 8-1 victory at first doubles. The Griffins doubled the advantage when junior Laure-Anne Josso (Vannes, France) and senior Axé Owens (Trenton, N.J.) produced an 8-3 verdict on the second court, but Goldey-Beacom College (3-3, 2-3) sliced the deficit in half with a 9-8 (5) nail-biter in the third flight.

Determined to keep the Lightning at arm's length, Williams-Mulesa uncorked a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing at third singles, and Josso registered a 6-3, 6-0 decision on the top court to procure a 4-1 Griffin margin. The Lightning struck back with a triumph at number six singles, but their hopes were short-lived. Scholtze fought back from a 4-1 deficit in the second set, rattling off the final five games for a clinching 6-4, 6-4 tally at second singles. Owens prevailed 6-1, 7-6 (6) at fourth singles before Goldey-Beacom College finished the afternoon with a three-set win at number five.

A year ago, Goldey-Beacom College got the better of the Griffins in all three meetings, including one in the CACC semifinals and another in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II East Regional, which ended the Scarlet and Gold's season. This time, Chestnut Hill College removed the thorn from its side to extend its season-opening win streak to seven matches.

One big victory behind them, the women's tennis team takes aim at another tomorrow afternoon, when the Griffins head to Bronxville, New York to meet six-time defending CACC champion Concordia College (NY) for a 3:00 p.m. clash of undefeated regional powerhouses.
