Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/17/2015) – Brushing off a two-match losing streak and a deflating first set, the Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team rebounded in a big way this afternoon, steadily upping its intensity on the way to a 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-21, 25-16) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over visiting Dominican College (NY). The Griffins overcame dropping the first set for the second time this season and notched just the second victory over the Lady Chargers in program history. Senior outside hitter
Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) powered the bounce-back effort with a game-high 20 kills.
Little separated the two side in the first set, when the teams combined for eight ties and three lead changes. Chestnut Hill College (7-16, 6-4) trailed by as much as 23-17 before a stirring six-point rally fueled by four Dominican College (3-20, 3-8) attack errors produced a 23-all stalemate. A service error gifted the Lady Chargers a set point, 24-23, but a kill by junior middle hitter
Emily Koehler (Bath, Pa.) saved it. Unfortunately, consecutive kills by Dominican College left the Griffins chasing to a 26-24 decision.
Neither school led by more than four in another tight second set, and the Lady Chargers found themselves just three points away from a commanding position when freshman outside hitter Kelly Murphy (Evergreen, Colo.) supplied a 22-21 edge with an ace. Chestnut Hill College had other ideas, however. Back-to-back errors by the Lady Chargers put the Griffins in the driver's seat, and Biro took them home with consecutive kills to secure a 25-22 second-set triumph.
The Griffins never trailed the rest of the day. They led by as many as eight (22-14) in the third set before settling on a 25-21 score, and stormed out to a 9-3 advantage in the fourth frame, plenty of cushion to coast to a 25-16, match-sealing verdict.
Junior outside hitter Kera Dexter (Selah, Wash.) posted 16 kills and 12 digs for the Lady Chargers, and junior middle blocker Cortney Yeoman (Glenn Dale, Md.) put in yeoman's work with 14 kills. Murphy led four teammates in double figures with 23 digs, and senior setter Amanda Hallstein (Holtsville, N.Y.) distributed 39 assists.
Biro registered at least four kills in each set, enough to record her fifth career 20-kill performance.
The Griffins were remarkable consistent on the attack, hitting .273 (13K-4E-33TA) in the first set, .239 (15K-4E-46TA) in the second, .238 (18K-8E-42TA) in the third, and .231 (12K-3E-39TA) to finish .244 for the match (58K-19E-160TA). Sophomore middle hitter
Melissa Shunk (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) was the most efficient, hammering six kills without an error for a .545 attack percentage (6K-OE-11TA).
Junior outside hitter
Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) made some history in the midst of her eighth double-double of the season (10 kills, 18 digs), becoming the fourth player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-dig plateau. Koehler remained a force in the middle, finishing with 11 kills, a solo block, and four block assists, while sophomore right side
Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.) contributed nine kills and a pair of block assists.
Freshman setter
Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) handed out a match-high 49 assists to go with seven digs and three block assists, while junior libero
Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) settled 32 digs.
Chestnut Hill College shoots for a season sweep of Goldey-Beacom College on Tuesday, October 20, when they head to Wilmington for a 7:00 p.m. CACC contest.
