Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/7/2015) – Exuding grit and resilience on Side-Out Foundation Dig Pink Night, the Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team climbed out of a two-set hole to score a resounding 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-12, 15-13) victory over Georgian Court University this evening, the first triumph over the Lions in program history. Junior libero
Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) recorded a single-game record 45 digs and senior outside hitter
Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) sealed the watershed win with her season-best 22
nd kill as the Griffins snatched a critical result in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division race.
Georgian Court University (8-10, 4-3) won both matches between the schools in five sets a year ago, extending its run of dominance in the series to 16 games since Chestnut Hill College (6-14, 5-2) joined the CACC in 2007. The Scarlet and Gold turned the tables this time, clicking in all phases after watching tight first (23-25) and second (22-25) sets slip through their fingers.
The comeback trail started in the third, a seesaw frame that featured seven ties and five lead changes. The Lions led as late as 16-14 before a timeout turned the tide in Chestnut Hill College's favor. The home side captured the next five points, a run punctuated by a kill from Biro, and outdistanced Georgian Court University to a 25-20 final. The Griffins then made quick work of their division rivals in the fourth, exploding out of a 3-3 tie to roll up a 25-12 verdict and force a decisive frame.
The Lions found their footing again in the fifth, erasing a 9-6 deficit and grabbing a short-lived lead at 12-11 on a kill by junior middle hitter Kelsie Blue (Waretown, N.J.). A Georgian Court University attack sailed just long to knot the affair, and kills by Biro and sophomore
Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.) delivered the Griffins a 14-12 edge. The visitors saved one match point but not the second, as Biro put the contest to bed with a booming effort that found the floor and sent her teammates spilling onto the court in celebration.
Wednesday marked the first time that Chestnut Hill College came back from two sets down since a 2013 match against Goldey-Beacom College.
Junior setter Kelsey Oliver (Scio, Ore.) racked up 37 assists and 19 digs for Georgian Court University, while Blue finished with a team-best 13 kills to supplement two solo blocks and six block assists. Freshman outside hitter Peggy Rosario (Toa Baja, P.R.) collected seven kills and 27 digs, and senior outside hitter Taylor Winchester (Hesperia, Calif.) just missed a double-double with nine kills and 22 digs.
Biro wound up one kill shy of her career high and notched five block assists as half of a brick wall that also included junior middle hitter
Emily Koehler (Bath, Pa.), who chipped in 11 kills and set a school record with nine block assists on the night. Junior outside hitter
Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) established a new career benchmark with 27 digs, and freshman setter
Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) did so with 53 assists, which she paired with 16 digs, four aces, and three block assists. Gelfan collected 11 kills for Chestnut Hill College, which hit .320 (10K-2E-25TA) in the do-or-die fifth set.
The two sides combined for a whopping 240 digs on Dig Pink Night, with the Griffins wearing special pink uniforms in honor of breast cancer awareness month. Trabosh, who leads all of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II in digs, easily surpassed the previous mark of 40 set by Elisabeth DiGregorio in 2009. Chestnut Hill College finished with 129 for the match, just three off the program mark established in a 2003 contest at Trinity College. Defensive specialists, sophomore
Peyton Reno (Wilmington, Del.) and senior
Meghan Chiovitti (Brighton, Colo.) contributed 18 and 12 digs, respectively, to the cause.
The women's volleyball team is at Nyack College for a 12:00 p.m. match on Saturday, October 10, before returning to Sorgenti Arena for a showdown with first-place Philadelphia University on Tuesday, October 13, at 7:00 p.m.
