Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (2/10/2015) – The Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team made sure tonight's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) clash with intra-city rival Philadelphia University was one to remember. Behind a school-record shooting performance (33-of-57, 58.9%) and the all-around prowess of senior forward
Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J.), the Griffins jumped out to a big lead and withstood several late pushes to secure an 82-73 verdict and their first-ever victory over the Lady Rams. Turner enjoyed career highs of 26 points and 17 rebounds as Chestnut Hill College snapped a 17-game skid in the series and avenged an 80-49 rout at the hands of Philadelphia University earlier in the season behind a 46-26 advantage in the paint.
Senior guard
Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Pleasantville, N.J.) served immediate notice that the rematch would be a different story, scoring six early points as Chestnut Hill College (8-14, 6-9) opened up an early 8-1 lead. After Philadelphia University (16-5, 10-3) brought things even at 18-18 (7:01), the Griffins gained a firm upper hand with a 17-2 burst that brought a commanding 35-20 margin at the 1:27 mark of the first half. Freshman forward
Nicole Parriski (Burlington, N.J.) scored six points during the game-turning run, while senior guard
Shayla Felder (Cheltenham, Pa.) added five. Chestnut Hill College established a new program record by shooting 65.4% (17-of-26) from the field in the first half.
Determined to continue their dominance over the Griffins, Philadelphia University made several furious rallies in the second half. The first, a 14-2 charge, brought the Lady Rams to within 41-37 (15:58) after a three-point play by junior guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa.). Chestnut Hill College readied an immediate response, Turner spurring a 13-5 run with nine straight Griffin points as the hosts regained breathing room at 54-42 (10:48). Back came Philadelphia University, however, as senior guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa.) buried a 3-pointer to make it 60-57 with 7:39 to play. Once again, the Griffins had an answer, going on a 12-4 push to again gain separation at 72-61 (3:24). The Lady Rams would get as close as five, but Felder went 7-for-8 from the line to ice what could be the program's signature triumph.
Schacker spearheaded the Philadelphia University resistance with 26 points, including a 5-for-9 (55.6%) mark from downtown. Senior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 18 points but was held to 6-of-22 (27.3%) from the field, while Young totaled 14 points for the Lady Rams, who were held to just 33.3% shooting (25-of-75) for the contest.
Turner's dominant performance came on an 11-of-14 (78.6%) line from the field. Her 17 rebounds were the most by a Griffin in a single game since Andrea Carter matched that total during the 2006-2007 campaign, and Turner also contributed three assists, two steals, and a block. She had plenty of support in Felder (20 points, three assists, two steals), Parriski (12 points, four rebounds), and Townsend-Mobley, who stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. With the victory, Chestnut Hill College equaled a school record with six CACC wins, set last year.
The Griffins return to the Sorgenti Arena hardwood on Saturday, February 14, where a CACC Valentines' Day date with Post University awaits.
