Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (2/21/2015) – Chestnut Hill College sophomore guard
Billy Cassidy (Primos, Pa.) made perfectly certain that Senior Day ended with a celebration, notching a new career high for the second consecutive game and continuing his torrid shooting as the Griffins broke free for an 82-66 decision against Felician College this afternoon. After honoring senior centers
Seamus Radtke (Philadelphia, Pa.) and
Filip Sekulic (Danilovgrad, Montenegro) and guard
Joseph Sipocz (Sykesville, Md.) before the game, Cassidy poured in a new personal best with 28 points on a sizzling 7-of-9 (77.8%) showing from beyond the arc, breaking the single-season mark for 3-pointers made in the process.
Chestnut Hill College (6-19, 5-13) trailed 12-5 in the early going as Felician College (5-20, 5-13) got off to a fast start behind senior forward Jeyvi Miavivululu (Paterson, N.J.). The Griffins recovered to forge a 15-15 tie, the fifth of the first 10 minutes, before the Golden Falcons pulled back ahead at 27-23 with 3:39 left in the period. The home side flipped the script from that point on, embarking on a 25-3 run spanning halftime that ended with Chestnut Hill College comfortably ahead, 48-30 (17:11). Cassidy jumpstarted the stretch with a jumper and followed with a triple that gave the Griffins the lead for good, 30-27 (02:03) and eclipsing the program's previous mark of 71 3-pointers in a season, set by Mark DiRugeris Jr. in the 2012-2013 campaign.
After a layup by junior guard
Luke Dickson (Pitman, N.J.), Cassidy gave the Griffins a huge jolt of momentum heading into intermission, burying a 3-pointer from the corner as the buzzer sounded and making it 38-28 at halftime. Chestnut Hill College continued the onslaught after the break, with Radtke spearheading an opening 10-2 run with back-to-back buckets inside. Sekulic and Cassidy then proceeded to drain deep balls, Cassidy's providing a 48-30 margin at the 17:11 mark.
The spread stayed in double digits until the 5:57 mark, when Golden Falcons senior forward J.R. Pringley (Elizabeth, N.J.) dialed up from long range to pull the visitors within 62-55. Radtke, however, responded with a basket, freshman forward
Edward McWade (Wildwood, N.J.) added one of his own, and Cassidy put the finishing touches on a 7-0 spurt with his seventh triple of the afternoon, 69-55 (04:13). Felician College got no closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Miavivululu and Pringley accrued 19 points each for the Golden Falcons, who also got 13 from junior guard Lamine Cooper (Willingboro, N.J.). Felician College committed 17 turnovers and struggled at the charity stripe, making just 12 of their 23 freebies (52.2%).
Chestnut Hill College received contributions from each member of its senior triumvirate. Radtke finished with 15 points on 6-for-9 (66.7%) from the field, adding four rebounds, while Sekulic knocked down a pair of 3-pointers (2-of-3, 66.7%) and ended on 10 points and seven boards. Making his first career start, Sipocz grabbed a rebound in the first half and capped the scoring with two free throws, the third and fourth points of his Griffin career. McWade logged his second double-double with 10 points and 11 caroms, and fellow freshman
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Cassidy is on a remarkable tear from the outside. The sophomore made a school-record eight 3-pointers (8-of-13) en route to 27 points in Wednesday's victory at Georgian Court University, then followed it up with a 10-of-13 (76.9%) effort from the field this afternoon. Over his last two contests, Cassidy is a robust 15-for-22 (68.2%) from beyond the arc. He has now made 76 triples on the season.
