Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (2/21/2015) – A rookie helped make sure the Chestnut Hill College women's basketball veterans had a Senior Day to remember as freshman
Nina Mazzarelli (West Chester, Pa.) scored 15 of her 17 points during a furious five-and-a-half minute stretch of the first half that helped the Griffins build a healthy advantage. Despite a late rally by visiting Felician College, the hosts came away with a 76-68 victory, their fourth in five games. The senior quartet of guards
Shayla Felder (Cheltenham, Pa.),
Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.), and
Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Pleasantville, N.J.) and forward
Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J.) combined for 50 points, 23 rebounds, eight steals, and seven assists for the Griffins after being honored in a pregame ceremony.
Chestnut Hill College (10-15, 8-10) rode the good vibes to an 18-2 advantage in the first seven and a half minutes of action, with Mazzarelli draining three 3-pointers in a span of four possessions and converting a conventional three-point play to cap the opening spurt. The Griffins led by as many as 17 (28-11) in the opening frame and took a 37-24 bulge into the break.
Felician College (5-20, 4-14) started strong out of the locker room, scoring the first six points before pulling to within 39-35 on a triple by junior guard Eliana Scanlon (New York, N.Y.) with 15:43 to play. The Griffins, however, scored 11 of the next 12 points, as Gorczynski bookended the burst with a layup and 3-pointer that pushed the margin to 50-36 at the 11:15 mark. But the Golden Falcons refused to disappear, slicing the discrepancy to four on two occasions, the first at 66-62 (02:35) and the last at 72-68 with 38 ticks showing. Felder drained two at the line to push the lead back to six, and Turner and Townsend-Mobley each split a pair to provide the final verdict, 76-68.
Driving the Golden Falcon engine was senior center Mary Chisholm (West Babylon, N.Y.), who scored 16 of her game-high 25 points after halftime and added 10 rebounds for an impressive double-double. Scanlon and senior forward Ashley Morris (West Orange, N.J.), nine rebounds, collected 19 points apiece for Felician College, which played all five starters at least 36 minutes.
Despite Mazzarelli's red-hot start, it was Gorczynski (five rebounds, three steals) who finished atop the Griffin scoring chart with 19 points, giving her 1,102 for her career in scarlet and gold. Mazzarelli was next in line with 17 on 6-of-10 (60%) shooting, including 4-of-6 (66.7%) from three. Turner paired 13 points with eight rebounds, Townsend-Mobley matched her with eight caroms and offered 11 points, and Felder chipped in seven points, three steals, and three assists. Freshman forward
Nicole Parriski (Burlington, N.J.) provided nine points and five boards.
With its latest triumph, Chestnut Hill College reached the 10-win mark for the first time since elevating to an National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II program in 2007-2008. The Griffins close out the regular season on Tuesday, February 24, when they welcome Holy Family University to campus for an intra-city showdown.
