Box Score Nyack, N.Y. – (2/7/2015) – After trailing by as many as 11 points, 48-37 (13:05), a late push captured Chestnut Hill College their first lead, 61-60, of this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at Nyack College with only 4:00 remaining in the affair. But the Griffins held the advantage for a limited time as the Warriors knotted the contest, 68-68 (0:13), before a heroic jumper from freshman guard
Nina Mazzarelli (West Chester, Pa.) gave the pride a triumphant 70-68 edge over their conference foe. Senior guard
Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.) led four Griffins in doubles figures with 18 points while Mazzarelli recorded ten of her 13 bench points in the second half revival.
For three quarters of the game clock, Chestnut Hill College (7-14, 5-9) played catch-up to a manageable Nyack College (3-18, 3-12) advantage. Behind junior forward Jamie McKeither (Laurel, Md.), the Warriors gradually grew their lead to its greatest margin, 36-22, heading to the final two minutes (1:54) of the first half. But thanks to the hustle of Gorczynski and Mazzarelli the deficit settled at eight points, 36-28, for the halftime intermission.
After the break the Griffins looked to work the ball back inside. The paint play of freshman forward
Nicole Parriski (Burlington, N.J.) helped them keep pace and as the clock approached the 13-minute mark it opened up the perimeter for the Griffins long range threats. Again, Goczynski was the primary benefactor, sinking several jump shots until Mazzarelli canned a clutch three-point basket that brought the Griffins within one point, 54-53, just before the seven-minute mark (7:12). The Warriors held off the Griffins for only three minutes more as a pair of Gorczyski free throws earned Chestnut Hill College their first lead of the contest, 61-60, at the four-minute mark (4:00). The conductor, senior guard
Shayla Felder (Cheltenham, Pa.), kept them in the lead until McKeither pushed the home team back ahead in the final 13 seconds (0:13) of regulation. Yet Mazzarelli had one more trick up her sleeve, breaking down court, and delivering the Griffins fifth conference victory only a second later (0:12), 70-68.
McKeither had 23 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals as Nyack College's top performer. She was complimented by a 15-point effort from junior guard Raven Makins (Laurel, Md.), who also recorded six rebounds and a steal.
Gorczynski hit 6-of-14 (42.9%) from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 (100.0%) from the charity stripe while adding two rebounds, three assists, a block, and a steal to her offensive production. Felder was the only other starter in double figures (11 points) as Mazzarelli (13 points) and Parriski (12 points) helped fuel the Griffins rally with 25 of the Griffins 30 bench points. Parriski also shared the team lead in rebounds (8) and served as the heart of the Griffin defense with four blocks.
