Softball Season Resumes With Dramatic CACC Twin Bill versus Wildcats

3/18/2015 6:12:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 New Castle, Del. - (3/18/2015) – After a long break from competition, the Chestnut Hill College softball team headed down Interstate 95 today for an afternoon Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Wilmington University. Down to their last out in the league opener for both sides, the Griffins knotted the game on a three-run home run from junior designated player Laura Eidam (South Salem, N.Y.) before finally giving way to the Wildcats in extra innings, 8-7 (eight innings). Game two was a pitcher's duel with senior Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) battling her Wildcat counterpart to an unfortunate 1-0 defeat.

The drama kicked in in the top of the seventh inning of the opener, when Chestnut Hill College (2-6, 0-2) brought all things even with a five-run frame. Down 7-2, the Griffins recorded their first two outs of the at-bat on three pitches. Junior catcher Megan Kehr (Exton, Pa.) gave them life with her single back through the box and after consecutive walks to junior left fielder Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.) and junior catcher Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.) the bases were full of Griffins. The following single to center field from first baseman Allie Williams (Warrenton, Va.) brought home the first two, 7-4, and Eidam's home run to left the next three to tie the contest, 7-7, heading to the home team's final at-bat. Junior pitcher Kaitlyn Johnson (New Boston, N.H.) (L, 1-1) took care of business to force extra innings but the Griffins fruitless top of the eighth allowed the Wildcats to cash in, scoring the free runner with a sacrifice bunt and a two-out single through the left side, 8-7.

Kehr, Williams, and sophomore center fielder Ashleigh Sharp (Dresher, Pa.) each had two hits for the Griffins while Wildcat senior catcher Michelle Panasiti (Sicklerville, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three runs-batted-in (RBI) to lead Wilmington University (11-6, 2-0).

In the second game, Wilmington University did their damage in the second inning, scoring after a one-out dropped third strike and back-to-back singles, 1-0. The Griffins did not reach second base until the sixth inning when sophomore designated player Jenna Long (North Wildwood, N.J.) led off with a single to deep short and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice from Kehr. The Griffins then pinch-ran freshman Jessica Pulis (Baldwin, N.Y.) in anticipation, but the opportunity was lost with Carney striking out and Cedrone popping out to short for the inning's final two outs.

Senior pitcher Chelsea Botsch (Smyrna, Del.) then collected the Griffins' final three outs after surrendering a seventh-inning single to Williams as she struck out eight Griffins and allowed five hits in her fourth win of the season (4-4). Unfortunately, Dayter took the loss (0-3) despite not allowing an earned run in a three-hit performance (6.0IP, 3H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 3K).

The softball team continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, March 21, when they visit Nyack College for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
