Box Score Rockville Centre, N.Y. - (3/19/2015) – Freshman attack Hunter Leckonby (Charleston, S.C.) and sophomore midfielder Rachel Perry (Gilbertsville, Pa.) took turns scoring the contest's last six scores over the final 15 minutes (14:34), but the late Chestnut Hill College rally would not be enough to snare the Lions as Molloy College preserved a 15-10 victory. Leckonby scored six goals in all, while also recording three ground balls and a draw control.
Molloy College (3-3) wasted little time building their advantage as they outscored Chestnut Hill College (2-3) 6-2 in the opening ten minutes (20:23). After an opening tally from sophomore attack Alexa Watson (North Massapequa, N.Y.), 1-0 at 27:51, sophomore midfielder Jacklyn O'Leary (East Meadow, N.Y.) tied the contest, 1-1, just before the 25-minute mark (25:07). From there, five consecutive Lion goals, including three from freshman midfielder Jessica Markowitz (Baldwin, N.Y.), separated the home team for a 6-1 advantage before Leckonby scored her first tally at 20:23, 6-2. Unfortunately, the Lions resumed their scoring ways, depositing four more goals before Leckonby interrupted the streak with the first of her two free position goals coming at 11:58, 10-3.
The Lions continued on for a 13-3 halftime advantage and they expanded the deficit to 11 goals, 15-4, just before the 19-minute mark (19:19) of the second half. Leckonby rallied the Griffin pride over the remaining time, scoring two unassisted goals before Perry got in on the act (15-6 at 13:19). She exchanged strikes with Leckonby over the final eight minutes, but the rally would fall shy of its intended result, leaving the Griffins on the short end of a 15-10 final.
Markowitz was the Lioness for Molloy College, totaling six points on five goals and an assist. She also recovered a ground ball. Sophomore midfielder Cooper Sesselman (Lindhurst, N.Y.) added four goals, two ground balls, and two draw controls while graduate attack Shannon Defliese (Garden City, N.Y) and junior midfielder Katie O'Brien (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) split six assists. Defliese added two ground balls and eight draws to her three helpers as O'Brien provided a goal, four ground balls, a draw, and four caused turnovers to her trio of assists. Senior goalkeeper Laura Vetter (Great River, N.Y.) made just two saves and recovered a ground ball in the victory (3-3).
The six-goal effort is the third straight multi-goal game for Leckonby, who has now scored in each of the Griffins' first five games. Perry totaled three points (two goals and an assist), providing an assist on O'Leary's tally in addition to recovering three ground balls and two draw controls. Freshman midfielder Julia Galantich (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) supplied the other Griffin tally while also hustling to two ground balls and a draw control. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Joe Lang (Manassas, Va.) denied seven shots and grabbed a ground ball in the loss (2-3).
The women's lacrosse team will play their third straight road contest in six days on Sunday, March 22, when they travel to Shepherdstown, West Virginia, for an 11:00 a.m. contest against Shepherd University.
