Box Score 2 Wilmington, Del. - (4/1/2015) – Chestnut Hill College walked away from Goldey-Beacom College's Jackson Complex with their first conference win of the season as they earned a split in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with a 6-3 victory in game two versus the Lightning. The Griffins out-hit the Lightning, six to four, but their offensive efforts were foiled in a 2-0 defeat. Senior
Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 in the opener and 1-for-2 in the nightcap, helping her own cause with a first-inning, two-run double and a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning.
The opener moved swiftly before slowing down for a busy bottom of the fourth inning. Goldey-Beacom College (1-10-1, 1-7) drew a lead-off walk and after a dropped foul ball, a single through the left side, and a wild pitch the Lightning had two runners in scoring position with no outs. Sophomore
Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) got the next two batters with a pop-out back to the mound and a strikeout, but the Lightning were still able to do damage with a two-run double to left center. They would be the only two runs that freshman Kylie Doyle (Tower City, Pa.) (1-4) needed as she struck out seven while holding the Griffins scoreless on six hits and a walk.
Game two started out better for the Griffins (3-13, 1-7), who scored three runs in their first at-bat thanks to three consecutive one-out singles, including a run-batted-in from sophomore first baseman
Jenna Long (North Wildwood, N.J.) (1-0), and Dayter's two-run double to left center field, 3-0. After loading the bases with a lead-off walk to junior second baseman
Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.), a Long single through the left side, a two-out, dropped third strike, a pair of walks, and a run-scoring fielder's choice off the bat of junior pinch hitter
Laura Eidam (South Salem, N.Y.), 5-0. The Lightning answered in the bottom of the frame on a two-out, two run single, 5-2, but the CACC rivals only matched each other the rest of the way as the Griffins went up 6-2 in the fourth inning on Dayter's bases-loaded walk before sophomore second baseman Amber Wroble (Mechanicsville, Md.) retaliated with a sixth-inning, inside the park home run, 6-3. Dayter earned her first win (1-5) of the season, failing to give up an earned run on two hits. Junior pitcher
Kaitlyn Johnson (New Boston, N.H.) collected the save with three innings of solid relief (3IP, 5H, R, BB, K).
The softball team returns home to host Holy Family University tomorrow, Thursday, April 2, in a 3:00 p.m. CACC doubleheader.
