Chargers Stifle Griffin Bats to Take Pair of CACC Games

4/11/2015 5:54:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Orangeburg, N.Y. - (4/11/2015) – The Chestnut Hill College softball team traveled to Dominican College (NY) for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) twin bill this afternoon, but the bats did not come with them as the Griffins were limited to just three total hits in successive 2-0 and 6-0 shutouts. Junior second baseman Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) and sophomore center fielder Ashleigh Sharp (Dresher, Pa.) recorded base knocks in the opener, while a fourth-inning single from junior catcher Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.) was all that stood between the Chargers and a no-hitter in game two.

Offense was hard to come by in game one, as Chestnut Hill College (6-20, 4-14) senior pitcher Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) dueled with Dominican College (16-12, 8-2) rookie Madison Dove (Cypress, Calif.). While the latter put up one zero after another, Dayter's only blemishes were solo home runs by junior designated player Anne Shiebler (Wrentham, Mass.) and sophomore third baseman Ariana Trembone (Staten Island, N.Y.) in the second and third innings, respectively. Though Dayter surrendered just one other hit (6 IP, 3H, 2R, 1BB, 4K), she was still saddled with the loss (3-8) as the Griffins were unable to put a runner on base after a leadoff walk to junior first baseman Allie Williams (Warrenton, Va.) in the fourth. Dove (8-4) walked one and struck out five in going the distance.

Dominican College jumped all over the visitors in the nightcap, scoring five runs in the first three innings to build an iron-clad advantage. Two hits and a Griffin error paved the way for two-run first and third frames for the Chargers, which were sandwiched around a single tally in the second. A two-run single by sophomore first baseman Shannon Truppi (Little Ferry, N.J.) capped the parade, 5-0, before the home side used a third Chestnut Hill College error to plate another unearned run in the fourth, 6-0. That was plenty for freshman hurler Jenna Maska (Warren, Mass.), who whiffed nine Griffins to offset four walks in a dominant outing (7-3).

The softball team is right back in action tomorrow, April 12, with a 1:00 p.m. CACC doubleheader against Post University at Chestnut Hill College.
