Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. - (4/12/2015) – After suffering a third straight shutout – and second consecutive one-hitter – the Chestnut Hill College softball team relied on its pitching and defense to scrape past visiting Post University, eking out a 2-1 victory in game two to salvage a split of their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader this afternoon. The Eagles took the opener, 4-0, but were outmatched by senior pitcher
Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.), who spun a two-hit gem in the day's second contest.
Chestnut Hill College (7-21, 5-15) quickly erased a 23-inning scoreless streak in game two, plating single runs in each of the first two frames. The first came on a two-out, ground-rule double by freshman second baseman
Jaden Perrillo (Shickshinny, Pa.), 1-0. The Griffins double the spread against Post University (16-12, 10-4) junior Samantha Esque, who came on in relief of senior Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) in the second after hurling a one-hitter in the opener. The home side finally broke Esque's spell with two outs, when junior catcher
Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.) grounded a single off the third-base bag and into left field, scoring junior left fielder
Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.), 2-0.
The Eagles scored their lone run in the fourth with the help of a Chestnut Hill College fielding error that allowed the batter to reach second base with two outs. Freshman Nicole Venturini (Scituate, R.I.) lined an RBI single up the middle to break up Dayter's no-hitter and cut the margin in half, 2-1. After two scoreless frames, Post University threatened to equalize in the top of the seventh, when the leadoff hitter reached second on a throwing error. But Cedrone caught pinch-runner Amanda Ely (Pittsfield, Mass.) straying too far off the bag, and Chestnut Hill College snared her in a run-down for the first out. Dayter took advantage, retiring the next two Eagles to cap her two-hit masterpiece. She struck out three and walked three, giving up no earned runs and needing only 84 pitches to toss her 10
th complete game of the season (4-8).
Cedrone accounted for both Chestnut Hill College runs, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored; she also gunned down a would-be base stealer for the final out of the sixth inning. Juniors
Allie Williams (Warrenton, Va.) and
Francesca Lynn Faillace (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore first baseman
Jenna Long (Wildwood, N.J.) recorded the other Griffin hits, and Faillace even broke her bat in the third inning.
Chestnut Hill College's hitting woes reared their head in game one, when a two-out triple by freshman shortstop
Koraima Dudley (Levittown, Pa.) in the third served as the Griffins' only base-runner. Esque (7-3) mowed them down from there, racking up 11 strikeouts, and finally got some run support in the sixth inning when junior third baseman Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) took third on a single by sophomore catcher Kathryn Dawson (Newfields, N.H.) and scored when the Griffins tried to throw out Dawson at second. Pinch-runner Ely came across on a Chestnut Hill College error, 2-0, and Post University tallied two more runs in the seventh, both on wild pitches. Sophomore
Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) pitched well in defeat (2-8), striking out eight against six hits and three walks in 6.1 innings.
The Griffins will take the short drive to CACC and intra-city rival Philadelphia University for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 14. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
