Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. - (4/14/2015) – Chestnut Hill College's struggles at the plate continued in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at crosstown rival Philadelphia University. Despite holding the Lady Rams to just five runs in the twin bill, the Griffins managed only one of their own in suffering the sweep. A one-out single in the sixth inning was all that stood between Philadelphia University and a perfect game in a 3-0 opening conquest, and a late opportunity for the Griffins went begging as the home side pulled out a 2-1 triumph in the nightcap.
Philadelphia University (17-19, 10-8) senior Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) registered just two strikeouts, but still managed to set down one Chestnut Hill College (7-23, 5-17) hitter after another in the opener. After Abromavage retired the first 16 batters she faced, senior third baseman
Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) broke up her bid for perfection with a one-out single down the left-field line. The senior took second on a sacrifice by sophomore centerfielder
Ashleigh Sharp (Dresher, Pa.) but was left stranded as Chestnut Hill College's lone threat went for naught. Abromavage (7-6) needed only 73 pitches to complete her one-hitter.
Abromavage helped her own cause with an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning, 1-0, and went 2-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base at the plate. Junior first baseman Mollie Burrell Harleysville, Pa.) hit a solo shot in the second, 2-0, and a two-bagger by senior shortstop Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md.) provided the game's final run, 3-0. Sophomore
Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) (2-9) did her best to keep the Griffins within striking distance, pitching out of several jams in tossing her fifth complete game of the season (6 IP, 7H, 3R, 2BB, 6K).
Dayter was the hard-luck loser in game two, as the senior allowed only two unearned runs in recording her 11
th complete game of the season (6IP, 7H, 2R, 1BB, 3K). An error allowed Abromavage to reach in the bottom of the second, and she stole home to open the scoring, 1-0. A two-out single made it a 2-0 game before the Griffins rallied in the fourth, a two-out single by junior right fielder
Francesca Lynn Faillace (Philadelphia, Pa.) slicing the deficit in half, 2-1. Chestnut Hill College had runners on second and third after a one-out double by junior left fielder
Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.) in the fifth, but the Griffins were unable to push the tying run across and went down in order in their final two at-bats.
Chestnut Hill College breaks from CACC play for a visit to Kutztown University tomorrow, April 15. First pitch of the non-conference twin bill is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
