Golden Bears Out-Duel Griffins In Pitching Heavy Doubleheader

4/15/2015 7:39:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kutztown, Pa. - (4/15/2015) – Pitching ruled the day as Chestnut Hill College and Kutztown University combined for seven runs in an afternoon doubleheader on the Bears home diamond. Unfortunately, the Golden Bears emerged as the victors in both contests, snagging a 2-1 (9) game-one win in extra innings before completing the sweep with a 3-1 game-two victory. Junior Kaitlyn Johnson (New Boston, N.H.) and senior Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) provided the unrewarded pitching performances while junior left fielder Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.) and junior right fielder Francesca Lynn Faillace (Philadelphia, Pa.) were responsible for knocking in the Griffins two runs.

Johnson and freshman Danielle Amato (Henderson, Nev.) battled for seven scoreless innings before Chestnut Hill College (7-25) broke the stalemate on a sacrifice fly from junior left fielder Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.). After a shifting of Kutztown University (25-11) outfielders, Dayter was placed on second base to begin the eighth inning. She was sacrificed to third and then home by Carney after a walk to a pinch hitter, junior Laura Eidam (South Salem, N.Y.), 1-0. But the Golden Bears responded against the Griffin bullpen in the bottom of the frame, hustling a run home on a wild pitch that would allow the Golden Bears to steal the opener on a 2-1 final after a two-out single to right field in the ninth inning. Johnson allowed one run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven strikeouts.

Kutztown University used the momentum to get an early 2-0 lead on the Griffins as a second-inning, lead-off double and a succeeding home run down the left field line gave the Golden Bears an edge. The Griffins answered in the fourth inning when a Carney lead-off single deep in the hole helped Chestnut Hill College cut the Golden Bears lead in half; she was safe at second and advanced to third on a misplayed grounder off the bat of junior catcher Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.). Faillace's single to left field was the executive agent, but it would be all the Griffins could muster in the frame and the contest as the Golden Bears extended their lead with a pair of fifth-inning base hits that left the final spread at 3-1. Dayter (4-10) allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out three.

The softball team returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play on Saturday, April 18, when they will honor their senior class prior to a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader versus Concordia College (NY).
