Softball Shuts Down Clippers in Historic Senior Day Sweep

4/18/2015 5:33:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. - (4/18/2015) – Chestnut Hill College softball seniors Courtney Dayter (Cohoes, N.Y.) and Brittany Neuman (Goffstown, N.H.) went out in style this afternoon as the Griffins posted back-to-back shutouts of visiting Concordia College (NY) in a Senior Day doubleheader. Dayter had a hand in polishing off both ends of the sweep, snaring a hard-hit liner to left field with two on to secure a 1-0 game one triumph before striking out eight in a complete-game effort to fuel a 4-0 decision in the nightcap. Sophomore Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) tossed a four-hitter in the opener for Chestnut Hill College, which blanked its opponent in both contests of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) twin bill for the first time ever.

After a brief ceremony honoring its senior class, Chestnut Hill College (9-25, 7-17) threatened over and over again in the opener, stranding two runners in each of the first three innings, as well as four of the first five. Concordia College (7-15, 6-8) finally saw its luck run out in the bottom of the sixth, when junior third baseman Laura Eidam (South Salem, N.Y.) drew a leadoff walk after an 11-pitch battle. Classmate Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) then reached when the first baseman dropped the throw after a grounder to second, putting two on with none out. Three batters later, junior catcher Megan Kehr (Exton, Pa.) lined a single to left center, plating Eidam with the game's lone run, 1-0.

Holloway escaped a self-induced jam in the seventh, recovering from dropping a pop-up and a base hit by setting down the next three Clippers in succession. With two outs and runners on first and second, Dayter tracked down a rocket down the left-field line to clinch Holloway's first career shutout (3-10). The right-hander struck out seven without a walk, and was supported by multi-hit games from Kehr and junior first baseman Allie Williams (Warrenton, Va.).

Much like game one, the second half of the doubleheader began with four scoreless frames, as Dayter matched zeroes with Concordia College junior Hannah Rubasky (Nanticoke, Pa.). Chestnut Hill College broke through in the fifth inning, when Williams laced a clutch two-run single to left-center field with the bases loaded and two outs, 2-0. After Dayter left a pair of Clippers on in the sixth, the Griffins doubled the spread on a throwing error and an RBI check-swing single by sophomore centerfielder Ashleigh Sharp (Dresher, Pa.), 4-0. Finishing her Senior Day with a flourish, Dayter (5-10) stranded a runner on third with only one out to preserve her third shutout of the year. She worked around seven hits and a pair of walks to help the Griffins post their first CACC sweep of the 2015 campaign.

Williams was 2-for-3 in both games, while Sharp was a force to be reckoned with in game two. The sophomore went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored at the plate and also made a spectacular catch to end the first inning, going full extension and diving to rob a sure double in the left-center field gap. Junior third baseman Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.) made another highlight-reel defensive play, crashing into the collapsible fence down the third-base line to catch a foul ball; she also hit her first career double in the first frame. Neuman made her first appearance of the season in game two, pinch-running for Heaton in the third.

Chestnut Hill College is back on its home field Monday, April 20, to host Kutztown University in a 2:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
