Goals Galore in CACC Opening Round, Wildcats Advance in Overtime

Box Score Newark, Del. - (4/21/2015) – Tied at the end of the first half, 10-10, and regulation, 19-19, today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Opening Round contest was decided in overtime with the last three goals coming from #4 Wilmington University sticks. Sophomore midfielder Lea Sanders (North Merrick, N.Y.) headed the #5 Chestnut Hill College crusade with nine points (six goals and three assists), the Griffins highest single-game point total since the 2012 season.

A mid second-half charge, initiated by three consecutive Sanders goals brought Chestnut Hill College (7-10) on the brink of its first-ever CACC playoff win. Facing an 18-13 deficit, the Griffins turned to Sanders who first deposited a free position shot at 17:32, 18-14, before completing a pass from freshman attack Hunter Leckonby (Charleston, S.C.) at 15:25, 18-15, and netting another free position goal just seconds later, 18-16 (15:08). The run was continued with goals from sophomore midfielder Jacklyn O'Leary (East Meadow, N.Y.), who cut the deficit to one with a free position goal, 18-17, before knotting the affair with her fifth goal of the contest, 18-18, and Leckonby who gave the Griffins a lead heading to the final 8:44, 19-18. Unfortunately, Wilmington University (7-10) managed to tie the game before the end of regulation as junior attack Sara LeBrun (Bel Air, Md.) sent the contest to overtime with her 56th goal of the season, 19-19.

In the extra frame it was Chestnut Hill College who took the initial advantage on a connection between Sanders and sophomore attack Samantha Herron (Cinnaminson, N.J.). Herron's second goal of the game gave the Griffins a 20-19 edge with 3:14 remaining in the first overtime, but after switching sides the Wildcats quickly seized control of the game as they tied the game a 2:38, 20-20, and captured the win with a game-winner at 2:20, 21-20, and an insurance goal in the final minute (22-20 at 0:47).

LeBrun totaled nine goals in all to match Sanders point total. She also recorded three ground balls, a draw, and a caused turnover. She got some help from senior midfielder Rebekah McCurry (St. Leonard, Md.) and sophomore attack Gabby Spalt (Forest Hill, Md.) who combined for seven of the Wildcats ten assists; McCurry also recorded two goals, four ground balls, seven draws, and five caused turnovers. 

Senior midfielder Megan Keffer (Wilmington, Del.) provided six points (four goals and two assists) off the bench while senior goalkeeper Corinne Dries (Bear, Del.) made 11 saves and recovered a ground ball in the win (7-10).

Sanders added four ground balls, two draws, and a caused turnover to her career day. She was perfect on free position shots (2-for-2) while providing helpers for junior midfielder Emorie Keimig (Freeland, Md.) and Herron, twice. O'Leary and Keimig each scored five goals, O'Leary also grabbed two ground balls, six draws, and caused a turnover while Keimig assisted Sanders on a second-half goal and played a tremendous two-way game with five ground balls, two draws, and three caused turnovers. Herron finished with two goals, two ground balls, two draws, and a caused turnover while Leckonby finished with two points (one goal and one assist), a ground ball, six draws, and a caused turnover. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Joe Lang (Manassas, Va.) made 12 saves and collected a ground ball in the loss (7-10).

The women's lacrosse team finishes the 2015 season with a 7-10 overall record and a 4-4 CACC standing, which earned them their first CACC Championship Tournament appearance since 2009.
