Griffins and Devils Split CACC Doubleheader With Identical Five-Inning Finals

4/8/2015 10:09:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. - (4/8/2015) – Anything but mirror images, today's dreary Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contests versus the University of the Sciences (USciences) both ended 12-3 in five innings. The Griffins took the first with six late runs, the last two on a double to right center from junior first baseman Allie Williams (Warrenton, Va.), while the Devils controlled the second game with nine first-inning runs.

After a groundout to short, ten of the next 12 USciences (7-17, 5-7) batters reached base in a nine-run first inning that started the second game on a dismal note. It improved with two Chestnut Hill College (6-18, 4-12) runs in the bottom of the frame with Williams connecting on a two-run single through the right side, 9-2. Unfortunately, the Devils' three-run second inning pushed the deficit to 12-2 before a third-inning groundout from junior second baseman Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) put another Griffin tally on the scoreboard, 12-3. But that was the last of the scoring on the evening as scoreless fourth and fifth innings permitted the Lions to claim the win in five innings.

The first game saw Chestnut Hill College grab the upper hand, using nine walks from the Devil starter to build a 6-2 advantage after the first two innings of the doubleheader. The Devils cut the spread to 6-3 in the third inning, but two Griffin runs in the fourth inning, 8-3, and four in the fifth, 12-3, propelled the home side to the early win in the opener. In the fourth, a two-out single from freshman left fielder Jaden Perrillo (Shickshinny, Pa.) was followed by a walk to junior catcher Megan Kehr (Exton, Pa.), a single from freshman shortstop Koraima Dudley (Levittown, Pa.), a USciences error, and a beanball, to produce the Griffin runs. And in the fifth it would be a series of Griffin hits and fielder's choices that ended the game early.

The softball team continues their CACC schedule at Dominican College on Saturday, April 11, with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
