Women’s Volleyball Splits Afternoon Matches At Bloomfield College, Biro Closes in on 1,000 Kills

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bloomfield, N.J. - (9/26/2015) – Chestnut Hill College doubled up on their Saturday competition, first squaring off versus Bloomfield College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match before opposing Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU). The Griffins suffered a league loss, their first of the season, to the Bears who stayed just a step ahead through three sets, 3-0 (18-25, 23-25, 23-25) before triumphing over SCSU, 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-22). Senior outside hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) led the Griffins with 20 hits, leaving her four shy of 1,000 kills.

Chestnut Hill College (4-11, 4-1) narrowly trailed Bloomfield College (8-1, 3-0) in the opening set as the CACC rivals knotted at 9-9 before the Bears ventured on a 16-9 run that put the Griffins at an early disadvantage, 25-18. The trouble continued in the second set, where Biro did all she could to contend with junior outside hitter Valerie Burmudez (San Juan, Puerto Rico), who kept the Bears just out of the Griffins reach in a 25-23 second-set win. The third set ended by the same final as the match concluded in Bloomfield College's favor after another tightly-played frame.

Biro scored ten kills while junior outside hitter Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) supported with nine kills. Freshman setter Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) was the conductor with 24 assists to which she added one kill, three aces, seven digs, and a block. Junior libero Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) captained the Griffins' defensive effort with 21 digs.

McBride played a great second match, her best of the 2015 season, totaling 16 kills and nine digs in a 3-0 dismissal of the Owls. The Griffins paced SCSU (2-11) to a 25-17 final in the opening set. The second set saw 17 tie scores and seven lead changes, but the Griffins emerged the victor with junior middle hitter Emily Koehler (Bath, Pa.) scoring five kills in the frame on an efficient .714 (5K-0E-7TA) hitting percentage. The Owls looked to extend the match to at least a fourth set, leading the Griffins to a 19-19 tie in the third frame, but falling 25-22 to McBride and company. Biro scored ten more kills complimenting McBride and benefitting from 34 assists from Sutton and 24 digs from Trabosh. She nopw stand four shy of a 1,000 kills as the women's volleyball team returns to Sorgenti Arena on Tuesday, March 29, to host Pace University in a 7:00 p.m. match.
