Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/4/2016) – Chestnut Hill College broke from their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule to welcome Adelphi University for an early-evening match at Sorgenti Arena. The visiting Panthers proved to be the better team, executing on a .315 (46K-11E-111TA) team hitting percentage and totaling seven team blocks in a 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-13) win over the Griffins. Junior right side
Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.) and senior middle hitter
Emily Koehler (Bath, Pa.) headlined the Scarlet and Gold scoring while senior libero
Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) commissioned 21 digs in defense.
Chestnut Hill College (7-10) lead early in all three sets, but Adelphi University (9-7) emerged as the victor with their efficient play off the direction of junior setter Mandy Manierski (Macomb, Mich.). The Griffins owned a 5-3 advantage before the Panthers stole the opening set. It was a seven-point run on the serve of senior right side Amanda Borges (Bayonne, N.J.) that forced the first Scarlet and Gold timeout at 10-5, Panthers. Adelphi University used that momentum to extend their advantage to nine points, 19-10, by the next requested break. They would take their own timeout after a brief Chestnut Hill College rally that brought the margin to just six points, 23-17, late. Unfortunately, the Griffin comeback fell short of its mark with the Panthers taking the opening set 25-18.
The second set appeared to be the pivotal frame neither side could separate by more than two points. Chestnut Hill College owned a 9-7 lead on a Koehler block, only for the Panthers to pace the Griffins to a 19-18 timeout advantage. The well-timed break allowed the Scarlet and Gold to pull even on a Panther service error (19-19), but the Griffins repaid the favor and trailed Adelphi University until an ace from freshman defensive specialist
Kara Turtzer (La Habra Heights, Calif.) even the frame at 24-24. Unfortunately, her next serve was answered with a kill from senior outside hitter Mandy Stanislovaitis (West Chester, Pa.) (25-24) and followed by a set-winner from graduate outside hitter Melissa Rigo (Elwood, N.Y.) (26-24).
Three kills from freshman outside hitter
Reily Byxbee (Indianapolis, Ind.) got Chestnut Hill College out to a 7-4 lead in the third set. But the Griffins' lead again withered as the Panthers knotted the frame at 9-9 and controlled the match to Scarlet and Gold timeouts at 14-11 and 18-11. They eventually took the set by a 25-13 final with Borges, Stanislovaitis, and Rigo recording the final strikes.
Manierski offered 38 assists, five digs, and a block, as she directed the efficient Panther performance. Broges and Stanislovaitis finished with double-digit kills, the former scoring 15 on a .382 (15K-2E-34TA) hitting percentage while the latter totaled a dozen (12) on a .280 (12K-5E-25TA) hitting percentage. Rigo added a team-high 11 digs to her nine kills and two aces while sophomore middle blocker Madison Canestrari (Ledyard, Conn.) hustled to five blocks in excess of her six kills.
Gelfan and Koehler combined to hit .393 (15K-4E-28TA) and score 15 points of the feed of sophomore setter
Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.). Sutton supplied 23 assists, while offering five points of her own with two kills and three aces. In addition to Trabosh, senior outside hitter
Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded nine digs. She also recorded four kills. Koehler added two blocks to her offense and led the Griffins with 8.5 points in the match.
The Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team takes a week off before returning to their CACC schedule on Tuesday, October 11, when they host the University of the Sciences in a 7:00 p.m. match.
