Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (11/16/2016) – Senior guard
Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.) scored 16 points, one of five Chestnut Hill College players to score in double figures, to go along with 10 rebounds to lead the Griffins past Georgian Court University, 80-78, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener for both teams at Sorgenti Arena on Wednesday night.
Chestnut Hill College (2-0, 1-0 CACC) jumped out of the gate early, starting the game on a 7-0 run in the first 1:43 of the quarter. Georgian Court University (1-2, 0-1 CACC) would respond, knotting the game at 11-11 following a made jumper by sophomore forward Alba Herrero-Gomez. The visitor's lead would grow to four, 16-12, but a 10-6 run by the Griffins to close the frame saw the contest enter the second quarter tied at 22 apiece.
The game continued its frenetic pace, with the Scarlet and Gold opening up a 26-22 edge following a Kuhnen three-pointer. The Griffins would maintain a narrow edge in the middle stage of the quarter, extending their advantage to five, 38-33, following an old-fashion three-point play by sophomore forward
Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.). Georgian Court University junior guard Jaelyn Tweedy (Richmond, Va.) would tie the contest with just under a minute remaining in the half, but a Wildgoose steal and pass led to a jumper by senior guard
Brittany McDonough (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 37 seconds remaining in the stanza would send the hosts into the break with a narrow 40-38 advantage.
Chestnut Hill College came out of the halftime break firing, starting the third quarter on an 11-4 run, capped three-pointer from junior guard
Vicky Tumasz (North Wales, Pa.), to extend their lead to nine. The defense for the Griffins would allow them to maintain a sizable lead, never letting the Lions get closer than four points for the remainder of the period.
The fourth quarter saw the Griffins avoid a collapse as the hard-charging Lions looked to take a pivotal CACC victory. A three-pointer by Tweedy with 5:43 remaining in the contest would knot the game at 68-68, setting up a climatic finish. With the teams trading baskets down the stretch, Tumasz came to the rescue, scoring the go-ahead bucket with 49 seconds remaining and salting the victory with a made free throw with 34 seconds left. The Lions had one last opportunity to snatch victory, but a jumper by sophomore forward Destiny Thompson (Bridgeton, N.J.) just missed, giving the victory to the Griffins.
Wildgoose joined Kuhnen with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. McDonough and freshman center
Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.) each scored 12 points, while Tumasz led the Griffins in scoring with 17 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Georgian Court University was led by senior guard Alliyah Berger (Washington, D.C), who scored a game-high 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Thompson also notched a double-double, scoring 10 points and hauling in 10 rebounds, with Tweedy (18 points), and sophomore guard Jada Atchison (Burlington, N.J.) (13 points), rounding out the Lions' quartet in double figures.
Chestnut Hill College returns to action on Monday, November 22, when they travel to non-conference foe Bloomsburg University for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
