11/22/2016 8:53:00 PM

Box Score Bloomsburg, Pa. - (11/22/2016) – Chestnut Hill College made it three straight victories to start the 2016-2017 season as they escaped Bloomsburg University's Nelson Field House with a 49-45 win over the Huskies this evening. The home team owned a narrow 24-23 halftime lead, which they grew to a 37-30 advantage by the end of the third quarter, only to succumb to the Griffins' superior rebounding effort (54-42). Sophomore forward Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) was the headliner in a balanced attack with 15 points, nine rebounds, an assist, and three steals, while senior guard Brittany McDonough (Brooklyn, N.Y.) corralled a career - and game – high 13 rebounds.

Both sides had trouble finding their mark in an 8-8 first quarter performance. The second quarter went a little better with Bloomsburg University (0-3) clinging to a one-point halftime advantage after a closing run by Chestnut Hill College (3-0). The Huskies took control just past the eight minute mark (7:44) of the second quarter, emerging from a 12-8 deficit to lead the Griffins 16-12 on a free throw from freshman forward Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa.) just two minutes later (5:37). The Griffins went to Nicole Parriski (Burlington, N.J.) for an answer as the junior forward worked the glass and scored four straight Scarlet and Gold points to even the spread at 16-16 just past the five-minute mark (4:56). Still, the Huskies paced, reestablishing their lead at seven points, 23-16 (3:05), before a flurry of action from McDonough and sophomore guard Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) left senior forward Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.) to narrow the gap to one point, 24-23, with 18 seconds (0:18) remaining in the half.

Unfortunately, after the break the Bloomsburg University went back on the offensive, separating for a 37-30 lead by the end of the third quarter. In the fourth frame, Chestnut Hill College atoned for their first three quarters of struggle, totaling 19 points and holding the Huskies to eight points in a role reversing effort that required the heart of a Griffin. Thus, the Scarlet and Gold united for a victorious rally, matching the home team at 41-41 on the first of two Wildgoose free throws at 2:39 and seizing the lead, 47-45, on a late (0:12) second-chance connection between junior guard Vicky Tumasz (North Wales, Pa.), McDonough, and the aforementioned sophomore forward. A pair of Tumasz sealed the victory on a 49-45 Griffin triumph.

Corridoni was one of two Huskies to reach double figures in a 27.9% (17-of-61) team shooting effort. She totaled 11 points in excess of five rebounds, two assists, and three steals, while fellow freshman forward Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa.) came off the Bloomsburg University to provide a team-high 12 points, six rebounds, three blocks, and a steal. Senior guard Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa.) led the Huskies' rebounding effort with 11 in addition to her six points, one assist, four blocks, and a steal.

Wildgoose made up for a 4-of-12 (.250) shooting performance with a 7-of-8 (.875) success rate from the free throw line. She was not the only Griffin to shoot poorly as Chestnut Hill College connected less frequently than their host with a 25.8% (17-of-66) team effort. In support of Wildgoose, Trossi finished with nine points, Kuhnen and Parriski with eight, and McDonough with seven. McDonough also recorded three assists and two steals.

Chestnut Hill College returns to action on Monday, November 28, when they host East Stroudsburg University in a 6:00 p.m. contest.
