Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.) poured in a team-high 23 points while sophomore guard
Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, but the clock would run out on the Griffins as they fell, 82-71, to East Stroudsburg University at Sorgenti Arena on Monday night.
Chestnut Hill College (3-1) opened a 9-7 advantage early following a pair of Trossi free throws. The Griffins would balloon their advantage to five, 14-9, following a made three-pointer by Kuhnen, but East Stroudsburg University (5-0) responded, going on an 8-0 run over the next 46 seconds, opening up a narrow 17-14 lead. The Scarlet and Gold would respond, however, with a late trey by junior guard
Vicky Tumasz (North Wales, Pa.) sending the Griffins into the first quarter break with a 21-19 edge.
The Warriors opened the second quarter strong, with a pair of free throws by senior center Allison Howard (Aurora, Ohio) capping a 19-2 run over the opening 5:29 to take a 38-23 lead. Chestnut Hill College answered, trimming the deficit down to five – 39-34 – on a Trossi lay-up, but a late bucket by sophomore guard Ann McKnight (Springfield, Pa.) sent the visitors into the halftime break with a 41-34 lead.
The Griffins opened the second half with five quick points, but the Warriors answered with a 12-2 run to take a 53-41 lead. The Warriors' lead expanded to 15, 58-43, following a layup by sophomore guard Noelle Powell (Glen Mills, Pa.) with 2:42 remaining in the third quarter. The Griffins' defense gave the hosts a spark, with a steal by freshman guard
Cailey Gibson (Marlton, N.J.) leading to a Kuhnen layup to trim the deficit to seven, 58-51, but a late jumper by the Warriors would send the game into the final stanza with the visitors clinging to a 60-51 lead.
The fourth quarter saw the East Stroudsburg University up they lead to 15, 73-58, following a three by junior guard Imani Brown (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) with 6:19 left in the contest. The lead swelled to 16, 79-63, with 2:53 remaining following a trey by Powell, before the Griffins began to mount their late-game surge. Fueled by strong rebounding and pressure defense, Chestnut Hill College was able to cut the deficit down to eight following back-to-back three-pointers by Kuhnen and Gibson.
The rally would be halted however, with the Warriors hitting 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory. Bench scoring and points off turnovers proved the tipping point in the game, with East Stroudsburg University holding 51-12 and 31-12 advantages in those categories.
Kuhnen scored her 23 points on 8-of-19 shooting, while also grabbing five rebounds. Trossi scored 14 points, grabbed 10 boards and dished out four assists, while Tumasz and sophomore forward
Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) each chipped in with 11 points, with Wildgoose adding nine rebounds.
Powell led all scorers with 28 points, including a 5-of-9 effort from behind the three-point arc.
Howard narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds to go along with six steals and a pair of blocks. Brown added 10 points and seven rebounds in the victory.
Chestnut Hill College resumes Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play on Wednesday, November 30, when they travel to intra-city rival Holy Family University for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
