Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (11/30/2016) – For the first time in program history the Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team has claimed victory over cross-city, and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), rival Holy Family University as a second-half clamp down suffocated the Tigers in a 80-67 final. Four Griffins finished in double figures, including senior forward
Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.), who led the Scarlet and Gold with 16 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.
Holy Family University (1-6, 1-1) controlled a 43-35 halftime advantage thanks to a superior first-half shooting effort (45.9%-36.4%), but in the second half Chestnut Hill College (4-1, 2-0) frustrated the Tigers, limiting their hosts to a 9-of-30 (30.0%) shooting performance and 24 points in the final two frames of a 13-point Griffin victory.
The Tigers were more comfortable on the Campus Center Gymnasium court, sprinting out to a 20-9 (4:22) lead behind the play of senior guard Alexis Hofstaedter (Richboro, Pa.). But Kuhnen headlined a late first-quarter rush that narrowed the deficit to eight points, 28-20, for the first intermission of the evening. That margin remained at halftime, 43-35, as each side totaled 15 second-quarter points.
Fortunes reversed midway through the third quarter, when a series of Tiger missed shots allowed the Griffins to tie the contest at 46-46 before the five-minute mark (5:31). From there, home calamity ensued as the Griffins matched Tiger missed shots and turnovers with sharp perimeter play from Kuhnen and freshman guard
Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.). The result was a ten-point, 60-50 (1:27), separation that was trimmed to seven points, 62-55, by quarter's end. The Scarlet and Gold defense ensured the Holy Family University woes continued in the fourth quarter, where Chestnut Hill College expanded their lead to as many as 18 points, 80-62 (1:23), in the final minutes of play.
Hofstaedter was one of three Tigers in double figures with 14 points, but sophomore center Casey Thomas (Hammonton, N.J.) was their leader with 15 points. The former paired her offensive production with five rebounds, eight assists, and a steal, while the latter added seven rebounds, an assist, and a block to her scoring. Freshman forward Elizabeth Radley (Hainesport, N.J.) was the third Tiger to reach double digits, she recorded 10 points in excess of eight rebounds, an assist, a block, and three steals.
For the Griffins, Kuhnen's double-digit point total was complimented by double figure scoring efforts from Glenn (13 points), junior forward
Nicole Parriski (Burlington, N.J.) (13), and junior guard
Vicky Tumasz (North Wales, Pa.) (10). Parriski added eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals to her baker's dozen while Glenn matched her's with seven rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Tumasz was a versatile contributor with six rebounds, three assists, a block, and two steals in excess of her scoring.
The Scarlet and Gold briefly breaks from their CACC schedule to visit Washington Adventist University for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, December 3.
