Vicky Tumasz (North Wales, Pa.) scored a game-high 18 points off the bench to lead the Griffins to a 102-67 victory over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe, Wilmington University. The historical performance marks Chestnut Hill College's highest single-game point total (W, 100-98 (OT) vs. Glenville State University on 11/19/15) and their largest margin of victory since an 83-44 triumph (39 points) over Post University on January 6, 2016. For the visiting Wildcats, it was their second highest points-allowed total since suffering a 105-69 loss to Bloomsburg University on November 16, 2013.
Chestnut Hill College (6-4, 3-2 CACC) opened the game strong, with a Tumasz three-pointer giving the hosts a 12-5 lead with 6:45 remaining in the first quarter. The Scarlet and Gold kept the tempo high and extended their lead to 11 points, 26-15, on a layup by senior guard
Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.) at 1:27. A pair of made free throws from junior guard LaShyra Williams (Wilmington, Del.) helped Wilmington University (4-7, 2-2) trim the deficit down to nine points, 28-19, with 30 seconds (0:03) left until the quarter break, but a last-second (0:01) layup by sophomore guard
Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) gave Chestnut Hill College a 30-19 lead.
Kicking the offense into high gear in the second stanza, Chestnut Hill College shot a blistering 57.6% (19-of-33) from the field, which including a near-perfect 6-of-7 (.857) effort from downtown. A three-pointer from freshman guard
Cailey Gibson (Marlton, N.J.) extended their advantage to 20 points, 42-22, with 6:59 left to play. And the Griffin lead was never threatened from there as a Kuhnen three-point play pushed the difference to 28 points, 52-24 (3:36), before a brief Wildcat rally cut that deficit to 23 points, 57-34, by halftime.
After intermission the Chestnut Hill College lead hovered in the low 20's until a Tumasz three pointer capped an 8-0 run at extended the advantage to 31 points, 76-45, by 3:38 of the third quarter. It remained there at the end of the frame, 83-52, thanks to another long range bucket from Tumasz (0:19). The fourth quarter saw the no let-up from the Griffins, who grew their lead to as many as 40 points, 94-54 (7:17), before claiming victory by a 35-point, 102-67, margin.
Williams led the offense for the Wildcats, tallying 14 points and five rebounds. Freshman forward Jamiere Jefferies (Germantown, Md.) narrowly missed a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds in just 21 minutes of action.
Tumasz led the offensive outburst with 18 points on 6-of-11 (.545) shooting from downtown. Sophomore forward
Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 points and nine rebounds. Kuhnen (17 points, nine rebounds), Trossi (14 points), and senior
Brittany McDonough (Brooklyn, N.Y.) (10 points) also registered double digit scoring efforts.
The Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, December 17, when they host Kutztown University in a 1:00 p.m. non-conference affair.
