USciences Shoots Past Chestnut Hill College for 84-73 CACC Prize

12/20/2016 12:01:00 AM

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (12/19/2016) – Chestnut Hill College hoped to match the University of the Sciences (USciences) impressive perimeter shooting performance (14-of-30, .467 3PT%) with their up-tempo offense, but in the end the visitor's long range game overcame both the Griffins' pace and superior rebounding effort (40-28) for an 84-73 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win. The Scarlet and Gold played catch-up after losing the lead, 21-18, and the momentum in a lop-sided second quarter (7-19) that left the Devils with a 37-28 halftime advantage. Five Griffins finished in doubles figures; a third consecutive double-double (17 points and 10 rebounds) from sophomore forward Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) headlined the pride.

Wildgoose powered Chestnut Hill College (7-5, 3-3) to a 21-18 first-quarter lead. Her six points and three rebounds kept the Griffins a step ahead of USciences (10-2, 5-1), who relied on the three points prowess of freshman guard Jordan Vitelli (Warrington, Pa.) to compete early. Unfortunately, the Griffins missed their mark in the second quarter. Plagued behind a 3-of-16 (.188) shooting effort the Scarlet and Gold initially grew their lead to 10 points, 28-18 (7:09), before the Devils' three point persistence ignited a 19-0 run that earned them a 37-28 halftime edge.

After intermission, USciences continued to shoot well from downtown. It earned the Devils an 11-point (53-42) lead midway through (5:01) the third quarter and kept them ahead by six points, 55-49, at the end of the frame, despite five straight Griffin points to end the period. The Chestnut Hill College momentum carried to the fourth quarter, where consecutive baskets from Wildgoose and sophomore guard Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) left the Griffins within two points, 55-53, of the Devils early (9:19). But that was when sophomore guard Alex Thomas (Hockessin, Del.) found her stroke, scoring eight points in a critical three-minute stretch that left the visitors up five points, 65-60, with 6:15 to play. Ensuing Chestnut Hill College turnovers allowed USciences to separate by double digits, 70-60 (3:45), before a parade from free throw line to free throw line concluded the contest on an 84-73 final.

Thomas hit four threes (4-of-8, .500) in her game-high 24-point effort, but Vitelli hit the most threes (5-of-7, .714) for the Devils in her 20-point performance. Junior forwards Laura Trisch (Doylestown, Pa.) and Colleen Walsh (Downingtown, Pa.) also scored in double figures; the former reported 11 points, five rebounds, an assist, two blocks, and a steal while the latter offered 10 points, two rebounds, and four assists.

Behind Wildgoose's double-double, senior forward Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.) (14 points), junior guard Vicky Tumasz (North Wales, Pa.) (13), Trossi (12), and senior guard Brittany McDonough (Brooklyn, N.Y.) (10) all offered double digit scoring efforts. Trossi added three rebounds and five assists to her dozen points, while her backcourt partner supported her 10 points with three rebounds, four assists, a block, and two steals. Tumasz provided her 13 points off the bench; she hit three threes (3-of-4, .750) and two from the free throw line (2-of-3, .667) while grabbing four rebounds, handing out three assists, and making a steal.

The Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team return to action in the New Year, as they break for the holidays before returning to Sorgenti Arena on January 4 for a 1:00 p.m. CACC against Post University.
