Box Score 2 Old Westbury, N.Y. – (3/12/2016) – Still awaiting their first home doubleheader of the season, Chestnut Hill College visited the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) for today's twin bill competition. The Bears shut the Griffins out 4-0 in the opener before cutting the second game short with three runs in the first, second, and fourth innings of a 9-1 (5) final. A second-inning error allowed the Griffins to score their lone run of game two. Freshman catcher
Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth, N.J.) recorded two hits in that contest, while five different Griffins recorded a hit in game one.
A pair of lead off walks got NYIT (2-2) started in the first inning of game two as a three-run home run to left field immediately staked the home team a 3-0 advantage. They equaled the production in the second inning with a two-out triple, a two-run home run, and a solo shot increased the difference to 6-0. Chestnut Hill College (1-17) got one run back in the bottom of the frame, when a lead-off single from junior first baseman
Jenna Long (North Wildwood, N.J.) facilitated a run, 6-1, after a sacrifice from left fielder
Jessica Pulis (Baldwin, N.Y.) and an errant throw by the Bear catcher when freshman right fielder
Jordan Clark (Greenwood, Del.) hustled to first base on a dropped third strike. Unfortunately, that was the only run the Griffins could muster against sophomore pitcher Sofia Evangelista (Massapequa, N.Y.) who held the Scarlet and Gold to their unearned run on four hits and a walk. She struck out five in the win (1-0). Riotte also recorded a single with one out in the fifth inning.
It was the fourth inning before Chestnut Hill College recorded a hit in the opener. Yet they had their best chance to score in the third inning, where a pair of Bear errors put both freshman right fielder
Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) and senior left fielder
Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.) aboard with two outs. Regrettably, Carney was eliminated on the back end of a double steal, ending the inning and the Griffins' first chance at scoring on the Bears. Junior shortstop
Corie Apodaca (Ontario, Calif.) recorded the fourth-inning, no-hit spoiler, singling to short with two out and a runner aboard. But again the opportunity was foiled this time with a pop out to third base. The Griffins got a runner to second base in the sixth inning and one to third base in the seventh inning, but still the Bears defenses held while their bats plated four runs in a 4-0 final. Opposite a three-hit, three-walk shut out from junior Laura McLaughlin (Gilbert, Ariz.), junior pitcher
Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) took the loss (0-7) for Chestnut Hill College. She struck out three while allowing four runs on eight hits.
The Chestnut Hill College softball team is scheduled to open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) slate on Tuesday, March 15, when they return to campus for a 2:30 p.m. home opening doubleheader.
