Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Norristown, Pa. – (3/19/2016) – Serving at the visitor on their home field, Chestnut Hill College opened their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with an afternoon doubleheader against Post University. Comfortable on their home mound, the Scarlet and Gold starters both gave a good show in winning efforts as senior Zachary Crim (Hatboro, Pa.) went the distance in a 3-2 game-one victory (2-0) while sophomore Patrick Kelley (Pipersville, Pa.) struck out nine in seven innings of 4-1 game-two win (2-1).

Chestnut Hill College (10-9, 2-0) emerged as the victors in game one, 3-2, forcing the Post University (5-12, 0-2) to their bullpen in a pitcher's duel that saw Crim strike out ten batters in his second complete-game victory of the season. Senior left fielder Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.), senior first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.), and sophomore designated hitter Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.) each recorded two hits with a wild pitch and an Owens single through the right side scoring the Griffins' game-winning, eighth-inning tallies. Looby now stands one hit shy of 150 for his collegiate career.

The CACC rivals each scored in their second at-bats of game two as the Griffins used lead-off walks to Looby and Campion to record the first run of the afternoon on a sacrifice bunt from senior catcher Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and a Owens sacrifice fly, 1-0. The Eagles responded in the bottom of the frame with a one-out double to left center and a two-out single to left field, 1-1. The starters settled in over the next three frames, keeping the score tied until a sixth-inning error, double, wild pitch sequence precipitated a second Eagles' second run, 2-1. With the lead in hand, Post University went to their bullpen in the eighth inning. That is when the Griffins struck, using a Looby single to left field and a perfectly placed bunt from Campion to put two aboard for a timely wild pitch, 2-2, and a run-scoring Owens single, 3-2. Crim then sat the Eagles down in order in the bottom of the eighth inning and survived a lead-off single in the ninth inning to complete the contest.

Other than a second-inning wild pitch, Kelley was on point in the nightcap. Meanwhile, a third-inning, run-scoring hits from junior centerfielder Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) and Slagle gave the Griffins the lead before insurance tallies in the seventh and eighth innings sealed the deal, 4-1, and the season sweep.

The Eagles capitalized on a second-inning lead-off single, following it with double to right field and some heads-up base running, 1-0. But the Griffins got the run back and more in the third inning as they used an error on the shortstop, a sacrifice from senior second baseman Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.), a passed ball, and a DiBona double down the left field line to tie the contest, 1-1, before a Slagle single to left field delivered a 2-1 edge. Kelley used the advantage, allowing only three Eagle base runners over the next four innings and handing the contest off to freshman Dino Cattai (Philadelphia, Pa.) for a two-inning save (1). Meanwhile, after reaching on a seventh-inning error by the Eagle second baseman, junior shortstop Jonathan Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.) scored the Griffins' third run of the affair on a passed ball, 3-1. An inning later, it was a two-out Owens single that precipitated the fourth Griffin run as a stolen base, a walk to junior third baseman Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), and a Baturgil single to left field made the final score 4-1.

Owens was 3-for-4 while DiBona and Slagle each record two hits. Kelley allowed one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out nine. Cattai kept the bases clean and struck out three in his two frames out of the bullpen.

The Chestnut Hill College baseball team returns to Latshaw-McCarthy Field on Tuesday, March 22, when they host #6 Millersville University in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
