Box Score 2 Bronxville, N.Y. – (3/19/2016) – Making good use of a 3-for-4 game-one effort from senior left fielder
Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.), Chestnut Hill College left Concordia College (NY) with a split of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. The Scarlet and Gold catalyst led-off the opener with a single and homered in the fifth inning to power the Griffins to a 5-2 victory. The Clippers got retribution in game two, scoring four fifth-inning runs to endure three late-inning Griffin tallies in a 5-4 final. Carney was 2-for-3 in that contest while senior catcher
Megan Kehr (Exton, Pa.) and junior first baseman
Jenna Long (North Wildwood, N.J.) knocked in two runs apiece with their two-hit performances.
With a game in hand, Chestnut Hill College (4-18, 3-1) used their momentum to score in their first at-bat of game two. Carney led off with a walk and Kehr doubled to plate the initial tally, 1-0. It was matched in the Concordia College (6-5, 2-2) half of the third inning, when a one-out double, an error, and a run-scoring sacrifice bunt evened the contest at 1-1. Unfortunately, in the fourth inning the Clippers separated for a 5-1 advantage thanks to four hits and an untimely Griffin error. Chestnut Hill College looked to rally in the later innings as a sixth-inning lead-off single from junior shortstop
Corie Apodaca (Ontario, Calif.) turned into a pair of runs after an error by the Clipper third baseman and a Long single, 5-3. The Griffins added another tally in their final at-bat with a one-out Carney double and a run-scoring Kehr single, 5-4, but the comeback was cut short after a pop-up back to the mound and a grounder to short.
Senior pitcher
Kaitlyn Johnson (New Boston, N.H.) took the loss (2-7) for Chestnut Hill College, allowing four earned runs on six hits. She struck out six in 4.1 innings while freshman pitcher
Hunter Irvin (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) limited the Clippers to three hits in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
After leading off the afternoon with a single, Carney immediately advanced to second base on a Kehr single, and then to third on a Apodaca sacrifice, before a ground out from senior third baseman
Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.) brought her home, 1-0. The Griffins added to their lead in their next at-bat thanks to a lead-off single from senior second baseman
Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.), a Long sacrifice, a ground out to second base, and a Clipper wild pitch, 2-0. They extended their advantage to 4-0 in the fifth inning, when Carney connected for her second home run of the season. A fifth run came in the seventh inning on another Kehr base hit, 5-0, providing plenty of insurance in an eventual 5-2 victory.
Junior pitcher
Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) earned her second win (2-7) of the season. She limited the Clippers to a pair of unearned runs on four hits and two walks. She struck out six.
The softball team briefly breaks from their CACC schedule, on Tuesday, March 22, for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader versus East Stroudsburg University.
