Box Score 2 Philadelphia, Pa. – (3/23/2016) – In today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader, Wilmington University used the seventh inning in both games to earn a pair of victories, 5-1 and 5-4, over Chestnut Hill College. Even with energetic support from the bench, the Griffins could not connect in the bottom of the seventh inning against freshman relief pitcher Caitlyn Whiteside (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) who came in for the save in the opener and earned the win in the nightcap. Senior catcher
Megan Kehr (Exton, Pa.) was 3-for-7 with a run-batted-in (RBI) in the twin bill.
Down 3-0 in the fifth inning of game one, freshman right fielder
Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) led-off with single to short and eventually came around to end the Chestnut Hill College (5-21, 3-3) scoring drought after an unassisted put out by the Wilmington University (10-12, 5-1) catcher, a wild pitch, a sacrifice by junior center fielder
Ashleigh Sharp (Dresher, Pa.), and another wild pitch that allowed her to scamper home, 3-1. But the Wildcats used the final inning to tack on two more runs on the scoreboard as sophomore pitcher Shannon Brantley (Bear, Del.) led off with a home run, 4-1, before a one-out single and a sacrifice put a runner in scoring position for an RBI single to right center from senior right fielder Taylor Rizzotte (Hammonton, N.J.), 5-1. Sophomore pitcher Danielle Bradley (Delmar, Del.) earned the win (3-5), allowing one run on three hits while striking out two. Her Griffin counterpart, junior
Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) allowed four earned runs on six hits while striking out two in the loss (3-8). Kehr went 1-for-3 and Magee finished 2-for-3.
In game two, all things were even, 4-4, after freshman pinch runner
Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif.) advanced to second on a sacrifice by senior second baseman
Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.), to third on a grounder to the Wildcat pitcher, and home on a Magee single to short.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats again used the seventh inning to break the stalemate. This time senior shortstop Cambria Ziemba (Wilmington, Del.) and freshman second baseman Jazmeen Llamas (Bakersfield, Calif.) led-off the inning with back-to-back singles before a two-out single through the left side from Brantley brought home the eventual winning run, 5-4.
Senior pitcher
Kaitlyn Johnson (New Boston, N.H.) took the loss (2-8) despite only allowing three earned runs on nine hits. She struck out three. Senior left fielder
Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.) and Kehr were both 2-for-4 with the former scoring a run and the latter serving as one of three Griffins to record an RBI.
The Chestnut Hill College softball team breaks from CACC play on Friday, March 25, when they visit Mercy College for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
