Sharp Single Secures Second Game Success, Splits Doubleheader with Mavericks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – (3/25/2016) – Junior right fielder Ashleigh Sharp (Dresher, Pa.) served as the heroine in the eighth inning of today's second game at Mercy College, as her single to short was deep enough in the hole to allow sophomore left fielder Jessica Pulis (Baldwin, N.Y.) to score the game-winning run, 6-5. The Maverick won the opener, 11-3, with a four-run first inning and a six-run fourth inning accounting for a bulk of their run production. Pulis and freshman third baseman Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif) each record three hits in the twin bill while senior pitcher Kaitlyn Johnson (New Boston, N.H.) picked up the game-two win (3-8) with four innings of solid relief.

The Chestnut Hill College (6-22) bats could not keep up with their Mercy College (8-9) counterparts in the opener as the Mavericks touched both Griffins hurlers for a multitude of tallies in an 11-3, five-inning, victory. Winn doubled down the left field line to begin the game. She moved to second base on a one-out sacrifice before hustling home on a wild pitch, 1-0, but the effort was no match for the Mavericks four-run at-bat in the bottom of the frame, 4-1. The Scarlet and Gold tried to counter the production in the second inning with a lead-off walk to freshman first baseman Alex Sauer (New Milford, N.J.) and a succeeding two-run home run from senior designated player Laura Eidam (South Salem, N.Y.), 4-3. Unfortunately, that is as close as the Griffins would get with Mercy College scoring a run in the bottom of the frame, 5-3, and six in the fourth inning to end the affair early on an 11-3 final.

The second game was all Mavericks until a sixth-inning, run-scoring Pulis single and five late-inning tallies reversed fortunes. With a run in the second inning, 1-0, and three runs in the fourth inning, Mercy College enjoyed a 4-0 lead before the Griffin bat awoke. Senior designated player Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.) ignited the Scarlet and Gold offense a sixth-inning lead-off single to center field. It was followed by a fielder's choice, a double to left field from junior shortstop Corie Apodaca (Ontario, Calif.), a line-out, a Sauer walk, and a run-scoring Pulis single to left field, 4-1. But that was just the appetizer as the Griffins evened the spread at 4-4 with three seventh-inning scores that came courtesy of back-to-back singles from Winn and senior center fielder Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.), a walk to Cedrone, a timely wild pitch, 4-2, and a two-run single to left field from freshman catcher Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth, N.J.). In the extra inning, Chestnut Hill College put the pressure on with a pair of scores. The first was Sauer, hustling home on an error by the Maverick third baseman, 5-4, before a Sharp's single to short added the insurance tally that kept the Griffins one run better than the home side in a 6-5 final.

Winn, Apodaca, and Pulis each recorded two hits while Johnson failed to surrender an earned run over four innings of relief work. She allowed one hit and struck out four.

The Chestnut Hill College softball team returns to their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule on Saturday, March 26, when they visit the University of the Sciences (USciences) for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
