Box Score 2 Norristown, Pa. – (3/30/2016) – Consistent offense built Chestnut Hill College a 6-3 lead before Philadelphia University rallied to force extra innings in the first game of today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. The Griffins emerged victorious in the additional frames with senior left fielder
Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) doubling down the left field line, advancing to third on a single from senior first baseman
Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.), and scoring the winning run on a single to left field by freshman designated hitter
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.), 7-6. The Scarlet and Gold ensured that the opposing rally would not repeat in the second game as a six-run third inning precipitated a 10-5 victory and the valuable CACC sweep.
In the latter contest, the score was tied at 2-2 after Philadelphia University's (9-16, 1-3) third-inning at-bat. The contest changed its complexion in the bottom of the frame where six runs propelled Chestnut Hill College (13-12, 4-0) to a commanding 8-2 lead. Junior center fielder
Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) led off the at-bat with a walk. It was followed by a pair of errors by the Ram pitcher and a three run double by sophomore first baseman
Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.) that made the deficit 5-2. A Looby walk and a Campion single to third base reloaded the bases for a run-scoring walk to junior catcher
Christopher Demey (Phoenixville, Pa.), 6-2, and a two-run DiBona single, 8-2. The Rams cut the margin to five runs, 8-3, in the fifth inning, but with both sides adding two more tallies in the seventh inning the final score stood at 10-5, Griffins.
Owens was 3-for-4 with four runs-batted-in (RBI) while Gilham knocked in two runs with a seventh-inning single to short. Sophomore pitcher
Patrick Kelley (Pipersville, Pa.) finished with no decision despite striking out 10 over four innings of work. Junior pitcher
Justin Harnett (Aberdeen, N.J.) earned the win (3-2), allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out two in three innings of relief.
The Rams scored two second-inning runs to grab an early lead in the opener, 2-0. But a one-out double down the left field line from sophomore second baseman
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) triggered a three-run Griffin that gave the home team a brief 3-2 advantage before Philadelphia University evened the contest with a fourth-inning, lead-off home run from sophomore third baseman Brandon Quaranta (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), 3-3. But in the bottom of the frame, a Ram error, a wild pitch, and single to left field from junior shortstop
Jonathan Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.) returned the lead to the Scarlet and Gold, 4-3. They added a run in the seventh inning on an Owens single, 5-3, and a run on an eighth inning error by the Ram shortstop, 6-3. They Rams atoned for their defensive miscues in the top of the ninth inning when they scored three runs on a two-out single to center field from junior second baseman David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del.), 6-5, and another single to center field from senior pitcher Fernando Garza (Loredo, Texas), 6-6. In the 11
th, Looby opened the inning with a double down the left field love. Leaving a Campion bunt single to third base, an Owens walk, and a pinch-hit single from Gilham to finish the job, 7-6.
Campion led several multi-hit performances with his 3-for-6 effort. He scored a run and knocked in two more. Senior pitcher
Zachary Crim (Horsham, Pa.) allowed three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two over seven innings. Freshman relief pitcher
Dino Cattai (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned the victory (1-1) with his three innings of scoreless relief. He gave up two hits and struck out two.
The Chestnut Hill College baseball team continues their CACC schedule on Saturday, April 2, when they visit Bloomfield College for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
