Titusville, Fla. - (3/5/2016) - In the final stretch of their spring trip schedule, the Chestnut Hill College softball team faced both St. Mary's-of-the-Woods College and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival Bloomfield College in seven-inning sets today, Saturday, March 5. The Griffins only recorded five hits between the two affairs, freshman catcher Brielle Riotte (Elizabeth, N.J.) broke up the Pomeroys' no-hit bid in the fifth inning of a 5-0 loss and junior pitcher Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) challenged junior pitcher Kirsten Wilson (Beaver Falls, Pa.) for the victory in a 2-0 non-conference pitchers' duel.

A lead-off double facilitated a second-inning run for St. Mary's-of-the-Woods (1-0), 1-0. They added to their advantage with a four-run fifth inning that provided plenty of support for the combined pitching efforts of senior Sarah Burnham (Jessup, Ind.) (1-0) and freshman Tayor Andrew (Clinton, Ind.). Senior third baseman Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.) got on in the first inning with a two-out Burnham error, senior right fielder Francesca Lynn Faillace (Philadelphia, Pa.)  reached in the second inning on a two-out error by the Pomeroy shortstop, and junior centerfielder Ashleigh Sharp (Dresher, Pa.) made it to first base on a third-inning error by the  Pomeroy first baseman, but none of them rounded the bases for the Griffins. Riotte's fourth-inning single came with one-out and she quickly reach second with a sacrifice from freshman shortstop Nichole Eberhard (Philadelphia, Pa.), before was ended on a pop out to the catcher. Freshman designated player Hunter Irvin (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) recorded a two-out fifth-inning double and Cedrone singled with two out in the sixth inning, but neither made it past second base as Andrew earned the save with three innings of scoreless relief.

Chestnut Hill College did not waste any time threatening the Bears, as senior second baseman Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.) singled to center field with one out in the first inning. She advanced to second base on a walk to junior shortstop Corie Apodaca (Ontario, Calif.), and then to third base on a sacrifice from senior left fielder Nicole Carney (Ontario, Calif.), but a strikeout spoiled the opportunity. Meanwhile, the Bears capitalized on two hits and a second-inning Griffin error, 1-0, before scoring another run with a  lead-off walk, a single to left field, and another Griffin error, 2-0, in the third inning. That was all Wilson needed as she struck out nine in her two-hit, two-walk, masterpiece ( 2-0). Holloway (0-5) was a worthy adversary; She failed to allow an earned run, holding the Bears to four hits and a walk while striking out seven.

The Chestnut Hill College softball team completes their spring trip, and their time in Titusville, Florida, tomorrow, Sunday, March 6, with a pair of contests opposite Lyon College (4:00 p.m.) and Fisher College (6:00 p.m.).
