Box Score 2 Norristown, Pa. – (3/9/2016) – As competitive as the opener was, 7-4, game two was anything but as Chestnut Hill College completed the sweep of The Lincoln University by a 25-4 final. In the first game, the Griffins made efficient use of seven hits and three Lion errors as junior center fielder
Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) broke the game open with a fourth-inning rocket at the second baseman while senior pitcher
Zachary Crim (Horsham, Pa.) eventually settled down to collect his first win (1-0) of the season. The nightcap saw 10 Griffins record multiple hits for the highest run total and largest margin of victory in program history.
Chestnut Hill College (5-8) dropped the hammer on The Lincoln University (1-7) in the second inning of game two. With seven runs there and nine more in the third inning the Griffins established a commanding lead, 16-0. The Lions eventually got one the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning, 16-1, and they added another in the top of the fifth inning, 16-2, but in the Griffins' half of the frame six more runs crossed the plate with a single to center field from sophomore second baseman
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.), 17-2, a single to right center from freshman center fielder
Gregory Avis (Franklinville, N.J.), 18-2, an error by the Lion right fielder, 19-2, a sacrifice fly from freshman designated hitter
Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.), 20-2, a single to left field from freshman third baseman
Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.), 21-2, and a single to center field from freshman shortstop
Evan Grimes (Norristown, Pa.), 22-2. The Lions responded with a run in the top of the sixth inning, 22-3, but three more Griffin runs in the bottom of the sixth, 25-3, only added to the deficit in an eventual 25-4 final.
Grimes went 3-for-3 after pinch hitting in the third inning. Isaac, senior right fielder
Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.), Avis, senior left fielder
Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.), senior designated hitter
Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), and junior shortstop
Jonathan Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.) all knocked in two runs. Sophomore pitcher
Andrew Sibson (Galloway, N.J.) collected the win (1-1), first of the season, holding the Lions to one earned run on three hits and a walk. He struck out six in five innings of work.
Each side scored a run in the first inning of the opener, 1-1. The Lincoln University added two in the top of the third inning to still lead 3-2 after a pair of two-out wild pitch allowed DiBona to scamper home. The turning of the tide came in the fourth inning, when freshman catcher
Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) cracked a solo shot, the first of his collegiate career, beyond the left field wall, 3-3. The home run was followed by a walk to Baturgil, a botched fielder's choice, a strike out, and a wild pitch before DiBona's missile ricocheted off the Lion second baseman's glove and brought home two more Griffins to establish a 5-3 advantage. The Lions used a one-out double and a Griffin error to piece together a run in the sixth inning, 5-4, but with two more Griffins scoring in the bottom of the frame, 7-4, Crim had plenty of insurance to put the Lions to rest.
DiBona was 2-for-2 with a run and three runs-batted-in (RBI). Sophomore second baseman
Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.), Campion, Gilham, Baturgil, and junior third baseman
Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) were responsible for the other Griffin hits. Crim held the Lions to three earned runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out five.
The Chestnut Hill College baseball team returns to Latshaw-McCarthy Field tomorrow, Thursday, March 10, as they host Le Moyne College in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
