Griffins Overcome Errors and Clippers for CACC Split

4/22/2016 1:33:00 AM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Norristown, Pa. – (4/21/2016) – Embattled in a tightly contested Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) playoff race, Chestnut Hill College welcomed Concordia College (NY) to Latshaw-McCarthy field to this afternoon's league doubleheader. After four scoreless innings the opener got away from the Griffins, who took a 2-0 lead before a significant number of errors allowed the Clippers to reverse fortunes in a 14-4 final. The second game saw its fair share of misplays on both as well, but this time the Scarlet and Gold offense showed up for a 10-5 victory. Senior catcher Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) highlighted the opener with a two-out triple in the first inning and a two-out fifth-inning single. Sophomore second baseman Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) was the star of the nightcap with four runs-batted-in (RBI) on a pair of singles.

Chestnut Hill College (21-17, 11-5) used a lead-off single from senior left fielder Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) and a pair of run-scoring singles from junior center fielder Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.) and junior shortstop Jonathan Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.) to grab a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener. Meanwhile, sophomore Andrew Sibson (Galloway, N.J.) cruised until three Griffin errors allowed Concordia College (12-21, 9-7) to score three runs in the fifth inning, 3-2. The Clippers added two more runs in the sixth inning, 5-2, two runs in the seventh inning, 7-2, and seven runs in the eighth inning, 14-2, thanks to six more Scarlet and Gold misplays. Ninth-inning RBI's were provided by junior third baseman Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and senior first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.), making for a 14-4 final.

The Griffins sought revenge on the Clippers and looked to begin their quest with a lead-off Looby triple in the second inning. A sacrifice fly from Campion immediately turned the three-bagger into a run, 1-0, that equaled in the top of the fourth inning when the Clippers used a lead-off triple of their own to produce a run on a one-out single up the middle, 1-1. But five Scarlet and Gold tallies in the bottom of the frame made the difference in the five-run game. Sophomore designated hitter Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led off the at-bat with a double to left center. A succeeding double from Looby brought home the first of the scores, 2-1, the rest crossed the plate on a single from freshman right fielder David McBrearty (Sicklerville, N.J.), 3-1, a Monaghan sacrifice fly, 4-1, and a Craig single to left field, 6-1. An Owens beaning led to another Griffin run in the sixth inning after a pair of wild pitches, a walk to freshman catcher Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.), and a DiBonaventure single to left field, 7-1. The Clippers got four back in the top of the seventh inning when two more Griffin errors made things interesting, 7-5. But freshman Dino Cattai (Philadelphia, Pa.) nailed down the victory while three eighth-inning runs supported his two-inning save (4) effort in a 10-5 final.

The Griffins now direct their focus to a 12:00 p.m. CACC doubleheader on Saturday, April 21, with Felician University.
