Box Score 2 Lyndhurst, N.J. – (4/8/2016) – Chestnut Hill College's offense was in full swing this afternoon at Matera Field as the Griffins swept their third Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader of the season with matching 12-3 five-inning victories over Felician University. Freshman right fielder
Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J.) highlighted the opener with a third-inning inside the park grand slam while junior shortstop
Corie Apodaca (Ontario, Calif.) was the star of the nightcap with five runs-batted-in (RBI) on three doubles.
Chestnut Hill College (10-28, 7-7) got started early with three runs in their first at-bat of the afternoon. Magee stole second after her one-out single. She scored soon after on double to left center field from senior second baseman
Julie Heaton (Berlin, N.J.), 1-0. An Apodaca double to left field made it 2-0 before a two-out bunt single from senior third baseman senior
Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa.) made it 3-0. Apodaca doubled in another run in the second inning, 4-0, but the advantage was cut in half in the bottom of the frame with a two-run Golden Falcon home run, 4-2. Unfazed, the Griffins continued to hit, scoring four runs in the third inning, 8-2, a run in the fourth inning, 9-2, and three more in the fifth inning, 12-2, to render a pair of late-game errors virtually harmless, 12-3.
Magee, Apodaca, and Cedrone all had three-hit efforts. Heaton and senior designated player
Laura Eidam (South Salem, N.Y.) both record two hits while sophomore left fielder
Jessica Pulis (Baldwin, N.Y.) and senior catcher
Megan Kehr (Exton, Pa.) accounted for the other two Griffin hits. Junior
Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif.) earned the win (5-11), allowing two earned runs on five hits and a walk. She struck out five.
The Griffins' offensive outburst spilled over into the second game with six scores crossing in the first inning thanks to a Apodaca double to left field, 2-0, a Cedrone single through the right side, 3-0, an Eidam triple to left center, 4-0, and a two-run double to left center from junior center fielder
Ashleigh Sharp (Dresher, Pa.), 6-0. Again the Golden Falcons offered a response, this time with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, 6-2. But the Griffin bats kept coming with a third-inning Sharp single, 7-2, a fourth-inning Heaton sacrifice fly, 8-2, and Apodaca double that left the score at 9-2 heading to the fifth. There, a Sharp single with a three-base error scored the first of three runs as a two-out Apodaca double to left brought home the final run in a five-inning 12-3 victory.
Apodaca and Sharp recorded three this apiece while Magee, Cedrone, and Eidam added to their game-one performances with two hits each. Kehr and Heaton were responsible for the remaining two base hits. Senior
Kaitlyn Johnson (New Boston, N.H.) also won her fifth game (5-9) of the season. She allowed two earned runs on eight hits while striking out five.
The softball team looks to continue their recent CACC success on Sunday, April 10, when they visit Post University for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
