Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (5/3/2016) – The rain stopped just in time to get in today's non-conference game at Philadelphia University. Chestnut Hill College wasted no time putting bat to ball as they knocked the Rams around for eight runs in their first three at-bats. Meanwhile sophomore pitcher
Matthew Kress (Lansdale, Pa.) struck out 11 in six innings for his fourth win (4-3) of the season, 17-7. Six Griffins had multi-hit performances, most notable was sophomore designated hitter
Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.) who was 4-for-5 with an eighth-inning, leadoff home run that served as the exclamation point in a performance that produced five of the Griffins' 17 runs.
The hustle of senior first baseman
Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) got Chestnut Hill College (25-18) started in their very first at-bat. He reached first base after a dropped third strike and advanced to third base on a single through the right side from senior designated hitter
Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), before another wild pitch brought him home (1-0). Two-out hits from junior center fielder
Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) (3-0) and junior catcher
Christopher Demey (Phoenixville, Pa.) made it a four-run inning (4-0). Freshman third baseman
Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hill, Pa.) led off the second inning with a single to third base and eventually crossed after Slagle's two-run home run (6-0). The Griffins added two more runs to their lead in their third at-bat with lead-off singles from Owens and DiBona putting runners aboard for a Szumigala triple to centerfield (8-0).
Philadelphia University (18-26) interrupted with a run in the fourth inning (8-1), only for the Griffins to reassert themselves with nine runs between the seventh (11-1) and eighth (17-1) innings. A couple late-game errors allowed the Rams to score six runs as Kress left the game without allowing an earned run over six frames. He allowed three hits and two walks.
On deck for Chestnut Hill College is a 1:00 p.m. contest at the United States Naval Academy on Sunday, May 8.
