Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (1/17/2017) – A spirited second half rally fell just short as the Chestnut Hill College men's basketball team fell to Holy Family University, 81-67, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play. Holy Family University (8-11, 6-4 CACC) was led by junior forward Dyllon Hudson-Emory (Harrisburg, Pa.) who netted a double-double with 33 points and 12 rebounds.
The teams traded baskets early, with a layup from Chestnut Hill College (4-13, 1-9 CACC) junior center
Chris Evans (Norristown, Pa.) edging the hosts in front by one point, 9-8, with 15:45 remaining in the half. Hudson-Emory took over from there, however, netting five straight points - highlighted by a rim-rattling alley-oop – to give the Tigers a four-point 13-9 lead. The Tigers' lead grew to 10 points, 21-11, following a layup by freshman guard Austin Chabot (Philadelphia, Pa.) with 11:18 remaining in the half, but a 10-4 run by the Griffins trimmed the deficit back down to four points, 25-21, with 8:11 remaining in the stanza.
A Chabot layup with 2:38 remaining grew the Tigers' advantage to 11 points, 37-26, but a spirited Griffins rally – keyed by back-to-back layups from freshman guard
Keith Williams (Deptford, N.J.) – cut the deficit down to three, 37-34, with just over 90 seconds remaining (1:35). Holy Family University maintained their cool, upping their lead to nine points before a late Griffins three-pointer sent the game into the halftime break with the hosts trailing 43-37.
The Tigers opened the second half on fire, with a trifecta from Hudson-Emory staking the visitors to a 14-point 53-39 lead with 16:12 remaining. The Scarlet and Gold continued clawing back, with a jumper by sophomore guard
Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) cutting the deficit down to six points, 58-52, with 10:53 remaining in the half.
The offensive onslaught from the Tigers continued, however, with a layup from freshman forward Maliq Sanders (Voorhees, N.J.) giving the visitors their largest lead of the contest, 71-55, with 5:31 remaining in the half. The Scarlet and Gold trimmed the Tigers' lead down to 10 points, 75-65, but that is as close as they would come, with the visitors escaping with a 14-point 81-67 victory.
Hudson-Emory scored his 33 points on 12-of-19 (63.1%) shooting from the field, including a 6-of-8 (75.0%) mark from downtown. He also corralled 12 rebounds and dished out two assists for the Tigers. Sanders also had a strong game for the visitors, scoring 18 points, grabbing eight rebounds, dishing out six assists and registering two steals in the victory.
Chestnut Hill College placed four players in double figures, led by Evans' 15 points and nine rebounds. Awl scored 14 while dishing out a team-high five assists, with Williams (10 points) and junior guard
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) (11 points) rounding out the double figure scorers.
Chestnut Hill College returns to action on Thursday, January 19, at 7:00 p.m., when they travel to Goldey-Beacom College to resume their suspended contest from December 6, 2016. The Griffins trail 42-32 following one half of play.
