Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (1/28/2017) – With five players scoring in double figures, the Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team used a second-half offensive surge to capture a critical 82-75 victory over Felician University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play Saturday afternoon.
Despite a slow start for both squads, Felician University (5-15, 4-9 CACC) opened a seven-point 13-6 lead following a three-pointer from freshman forward Safiyyah Lee (Voorhees, N.J.) with 4:01 remaining. Chestnut Hill College (12-7, 8-5) clawed back, with an old-fashion three-point play from sophomore forward
Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) edging the Griffins in front, 14-13. The Scarlet and Gold buckled down defensively over the final minute and a half, finishing the quarter on a 5-2 to take a 19-15 advantage into the second stanza.
The Griffins continued applying pressure in the second quarter, with an offensive rebound and put-back from junior guard
Vicky Tumasz (North Wales, Pa.) staking the hosts to a nine-point lead, 30-21. The Golden Falcons battled back, knotting the game at 30-30 on a layup from junior forward Maya Trapp (Red Bank, N.J.) with just under three minutes (2:57) to play. The Griffins would take the lead just 23 seconds later on a basket from sophomore guard
Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.), but that would be the final scoring of the half, as both teams failed to score over the final 2:34 of the quarter.
The Griffins roared out of the halftime break, with a pair of Tumasz free throws pushing the lead to 14 points, 46-32, with 7:00 minutes remaining in the quarter. Felician University didn't fold, outscoring the Griffins 19-4 over the next 5:17 to take a 51-50 advantage with 1:43 remaining. Chestnut Hill College answered, finishing the quarter on a 7-0 run, capped by a jumped from senior guard
Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.) with 10 seconds remaining, to take a six-point, 57-51 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Scarlet and Gold were able to extend their lead back to 14 points, 70-56, with 6:05 remaining following a made layup from junior forward
Nicole Parriski (Burlington, N.J.). Though trailing by double figures for the majority of the quarter, the Golden Falcons continued to battle, trimming the deficit down to five points, 80-75, after a trifecta from sophomore guard Kayla Hourany (Queens, N.Y.) with 48 seconds to play. The Griffins wouldn't break, however, hitting 2-of-4 free throws down the stretch to clinch the 82-75 victory.
