Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (1/4/2017) – Chestnut Hill College freshman guard
Nasir Bell (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a career-high 16 points, while also chipping in five rebounds, but it wouldn't be enough as the Griffins fell to Post University, 81-56, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action at Sorgenti Arena on Wednesday night.
Post University (6-8, 5-2 CACC) opened an 8-0 lead in the first 2:50 of play, spurred by back-to-back layups from sophomore forward Adnan Halilovich (Mali Zvornik, Serbia). A pair of free throws from Chestnut Hill College (4-9, 1-5 CACC) junior guard
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) got the Scarlet and Gold on the board (8-2), but the Eagles had an answer, ripping off nine straight points, seizing a 17-2 advantage with 13:16 left in the half. The Griffins trimmed the deficit down to 10 at the 11:33 mark (17-7), following a three pointer from junior center
Chris Evans (Norristown, Pa.), but that is as close as they would come as the visitors extended their lead to 29 points (48-19) with 23 seconds (:23) remaining before a buzzer-beating three by Bell sent the game into the halftime break with the hosts trailing 48-22.
Post University shot a blistering 64.3 percent (18-of-38) from the field in the half, including an equally impressive 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from long range.
The second half opened with the teams trading baskets before an old-fashion three-point play from Isaac cut the deficit down to 19 points (58-39) with 14:02 remaining in the contest. That is as close as the Griffins would get in the stanza, as the hot-shooting of the Eagles continued late into the contest. The lead grew as large as 27 points twice during the half, but a valiant effort from the Griffins would not let the lead grow larger. A pair of free throws from Bell cut the Griffins' deficit to 23 points (79-56) with one minute (1:00) remaining, before a pair of late free throws from the Eagles gave the game its 81-56 final.
The hot shooting for Post University continued in the second half, as they finished the game shooting 54.7 percent (29-of-53) from the field, 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from downtown and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the charity stripe. Chestnut Hill College was held to 29.7 percent (19-of-64) from the field, but shot an astounding 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the free throw line.
The Eagles were led by junior guard Tyler Desrosiers (Agawam, Mass.), who tossed in a game-high 23 points while adding six rebounds. Halilovich added 16 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Malcolm Amos (Brookport, Ill.) rounded out the Eagles in double figures with 11 points to go along with a contest-best six assists.
The Griffins were led by Bell's 16 points and five rebounds, with junior forward
Ed McWade (Wildwood, N.J.) narrowly missing a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, while also chipping in a team-high four assists. Isaac also had a solid game, contributing 11 points and six rebounds for the Scarlet and Gold.
Chestnut Hill College will continue CACC play on Saturday, January 7, when they travel to Nyack College for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
