Chestnut Hill College Persistence Pays In 78-66 win at Nyack College

Box Score Nyack, N.Y. - (1/7/2017) – Winning for the fourth time in five games, Chestnut Hill College placed five players in double figures and overwhelmed Nyack College in the even quarters to endure for a 78-66 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win over the Warriors this afternoon. The Griffins put five players in double figures, but it was the constant motor of sophomore guard Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) that put them over the top in the fourth quarter. She scored all of her, team-high, 16 points in the second half and helped put the Griffins at the free throw line 40 (31-of-40, .775) times with her 8-of-12 (.750) effort at the charity stripe.
 
After trailing for most of the first quarter, Chestnut Hill College (9-5, 5-3) emerged for a 32-25 halftime advantage on the low-post play of sophomore forward Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) and the perimeter punctuation of freshman forward Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.), who hit two of her three (3-of-6, .500) three-point baskets in the first half. Early it was junior center Nicole Parriski (Burlington, N.J.) who joined Wildgoose in the paint. The duo combined with senior forward Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.) and junior guard Vicky Tumasz (North Wales, Pa.) to spread the floor and match the home team in a 15-15 first-quarter stalemate. In the second quarter, the Scarlet and Gold limited the Warriors to just 10 points while a pair of three point baskets and a free throw from Glenn pushed the Griffins to a seven-point, 32-25, halftime edge.
 
It was a late free throw from senior guard Erica McIntosh (Waldorf, Md.) that added a point to the Scarlet and Gold lead heading to the fourth quarter, 47-39. There, Trossi's determination defeated the Warriors as she scored 12 points in the period and stole the ball in a series of action that allowed Chestnut Hill College to advance their lead to 10 points, 51-41, for the first time in the opening minute (9:04). The Griffins really separated late, using a Trossi and-one to gain a 15-point, 71-56, edge with 1:52 remaining in the contest. Not long after (1:15), the difference maxed out at 16 points, 74-58, on a Kuhnen three pointer and it closed at a dozen (12) points, 78-66, after a concluding free throw from senior guard Brittany McDonough (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
 
Freshman guard Yamalis Villegas (Cherry Hill, N.J.) scored a game-high 22 points to lead Nyack College. She hit four (4-of-6, .667) from long range and added seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals to the effort. Her elder backcourt partner, graduate Tayelor McCalister (Akron, Ohio) played the supporting role for 18 points, four rebounds, five assists, one block, and three steals.
 
Trossi added seven rebounds and two steals to five consecutive double digit scoring effort. Behind her, Glenn's season-high 14 points stood out from a trio of 11-point performers. Glenn finished 3-of-6 (.500) from beyond the arch. Wildgoose, Kuhnen, and Parriski were the scoring triplets. Wildgoose added a team-high eight rebounds and a steal. Parriski was a factor on defense with two blocks and two steals.
 
The Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team looks to continue their winning ways on Tuesday, January 10, when they visit CACC North-leading Caldwell University for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
