Chestnut Hill College Soars Past Washington Adventist University, 98-84

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (2/1/2017) – Keyed by a career-high 24 points from junior guard Vicky Tumasz (North Wales, Pa.), the Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team topped Washington Adventist University, 98-84, in non-conference action. Tumasz added seven rebounds and five steals to go along with her career-best, while five other Griffins also posted double-digit scoring totals in the win.
 

The teams traded baskets early, with a jumper from Washington Adventist University (7-16) senior center Olivia Turner (Clinton, Md.) knotting the game at 6-6 at the 6:35 mark of the opening stanza. The visitors grew their lead to five, 13-8, at the 5:02 mark following a pair of made free throws by sophomore guard Demyra Selby (Salisbury, Md.). Chestnut Hill College (13-7) responded, with a pair of made free throws from freshman forward Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.) giving the hosts a 20-18 edge with 1:37 remaining in the opening quarter. The Scarlet and Gold's defensive pressure continued down the stretch, with a layup from sophomore guard Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) with one (00:01) second remaining giving the Griffins a 26-20 lead following one quarter of play.
 
The second quarter saw Chestnut Hill College establish a lead which they would never relinquish, with a Tumasz jumper at the 5:13 mark putting the hosts up nine, 35-26. The Griffins would use a 9-0 run over the next 2:58 to balloon the advantage to 18 points, 44-26, following a jumper from senior guard Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.) with 2:15 remaining before the half. The Shock cut the deficit down to 16 points, 47-31, following a trifecta from freshman guard Chynna Smith (Silver Spring, Md.), but it wouldn't get any closer as the hosts entered the halftime break with a 17-point 52-35 lead.
 
With the offense kicking on all cylinders, the Griffins came out of the break red-hot, extending their advantage to 25, 60-35, after Trossi nailed a layup after a feed from sophomore forward Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.). The torrid pace continued for the Scarlet and Gold, with Trossi finding Tumasz for a three-pointer with 4:46 left in the third quarter for a 26-point, 71-45 lead. The Shock continued to battle back, with back-to-back three-points from senior guard Emily Piazza (Newport News, Va.) and junior forward Courtney Jenkins (Philadelphia, Pa.) to close out the quarter trimming the deficit to 16, 80-64, entering the final 10 minutes of play.

The Shock continued to chip away in the opening moments of the fourth quarter, with another trey by Jenkins cutting the Griffins' lead to 13, 82-69, with 7:387 remaining. The Scarlet and Gold responded, going on a 13-2 run over the next 2:53 to push the advantage to 24 points, 95-71. The Shock continued to battle, but the Griffins were able to hold off a late rally, clinching a convincing 98-84 victory.
 

Jenkins and Turner combined for 32 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Shock. Smith tallied 15 points on 5-of-6 (83.3%) shooting from distance, while Selby tossed in 12 points of her own. The Shock shot 47.1% (32-of-68) from the field, including a 43.5% (10-for-23) mark from downtown.
 
Tumasz scored her career-high 24 points on 6-of-14 (42.8%) shooting from the floor. She added seven rebounds, three assists and five steals in 29 minutes of action. Wildgoose notched a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, with Kuhnen adding 12 points and four boards. Glenn (17 points), Trossi (15 points, nine assists, six rebounds), and junior forward Nicole Parriski (Burlington, N.J.) rounded out the six Griffins in double figures.
 
Chestnut Hill College resumes Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) on Saturday, February 4, when they travel to Dominican College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
