Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.) poured in 24 points on 4-of-6 (66.7%) shooting from three-point range to lead the Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team past Concordia College, 89-72, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action this afternoon. Combined with an always potent offense, the Griffins defense rose to the occasion, scoring 34 points off of 25 turnovers (16 steals) to outpace the visitors.
Following an emotional Senior Day ceremony prior to the contest, Concordia College (7-17, 7-9 CACC) raced out of the gate, scoring the first seven points of the contest to take a 7-0 lead at the 7:48 mark of the first quarter. Chestnut Hill College (15-8, 10-6 CACC) responded, with junior forward
Nicole Parriski (Burlington, N.J.) finding Kuhnen for a layup, trimming the deficit down to just three points, 11-8, with 5:29 remaining. The Clippers extended their lead back to seven, 20-13, after a layup from junior Julianne Wilkinson (Kingston, N.Y.), but the Scarlet and Gold rallied, taking their first lead of the contest (21-20) following a layup from sophomore guard
Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) with 1:22 remaining. The Clippers retake the lead with nine (00:09) seconds left, with senior guard Jessica Rosalbo (Staten Island, N.Y.) sinking 3-of-4 free throws to give the visitors a 25-23 edge heading into the second stanza.
The second period was a see-saw battle, with neither team gaining an advantage. A pair of Kuhnen free throws put the hosts up 33-31 with 4:21 left, but the visitors responded, with a Rosalbo layup giving the Clippers a narrow one-point lead, 35-34. With Concordia College holding a 37-36 lead with 1:48 remaining, the Griffins got to work, closing the quarter on a 7-0 run, capped by a buzzer-beating jumper from Kuhnen, to enter halftime with a 43-37 edge.
Chestnut Hill College came out of the gates strong in the third period, with sophomore forward
Jaeda Wildgoose (Somerset, N.J.) working in a nifty layup to push the host's advantage to eight, 48-40. The Clippers wouldn't go away, with a Wilkinson layup trimming their deficit down to just one, 59-58, with 3:02 left in the quarter. Trailing by three points, 61-58, Concordia College used a 7-0 quarter-ending run of their own to enter the final frame holding a narrow 65-61 edge.
The final quarter is where the Griffins made their mark, outscoring the Clippers 28-7 in the final frame to secure the 89-72 win. Clinging to a 73-71 lead with 3:13 remaining, the Griffins offense went into overdrive, outscoring the visitors 16-1 to blow open what had been a close game. The Chestnut Hill College bench scored 15 points in the period, with the hosts also holding a 16-4 edge in points in the paint.
Junior forward Hadiyah Black (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a monster game for the Clippers, scoring 15 points, hauling in 25 boards (16 defensive), and swatting five shots. Wilkinson led all scorers with 26 points, while Rosalbo chipped in 15 points and added five rebounds in defeat.
Four Griffins scored in double-figures, highlighted by Kuhnen's 24 points. Wildgoose scored 17 points and grabbed eight boards, while Trossi continued to stuff the stat sheet, scoring 15 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, dishing out six assists and registering seven steals. Freshman forward
Shannon Glenn (Philadelphia, Pa.) rounded out the Griffins in double-digits, scoring 20 points in addition to four rebounds.
